I want to start by saying this is actually painful for me to write. Ever since I was a kid, Breitling has lived in my mind as a true legacy brand, a pioneering Swiss watchmaker with real history and purpose.

But what I’m seeing now honestly feels like a betrayal of that name…

The Navitimer is one of the most iconic watches ever made. I genuinely love the classic design, and I even like some of the modern reinterpretations. That’s exactly why I went to check one out in person and started watching close-up videos of it in operation… and I was honestly shocked.

At around $11,000, pairing a so-called pilot/tool watch with 3 bar water resistance already feels questionable, but you know what, fine, let’s move past that.

What I can’t get past is the execution and finishing.
The seconds hand looks rough almost like it was painted carelessly in a kindergarden. The bottom of the seconds hand, which reflects clearly in the polished surfaces of the other hands, isn’t even properly finished. It doesn’t look polished, it almost looks dirty in reflection, and because of the wide polished edges on the other hands, you keep noticing it constantly.

The dial itself, in certain lighting, genuinely reminds me of cheap Chinese plastic. The printed markers aren’t consistent, I couldn’t find two identical indices, no clean edges, no uniform shapes. The date window is also misaligned (and I’ve noticed the same issue in other references, on other Navitimers and videos).

Then there’s the movement… completely lifeless, soulless visually, with little to no decoration, and to top it all off, the engraving on the caseback looks like something you’d find on the cheapest “Best Dad” supermarket lighter.

Is this seriously what a $11,000 luxury watch is supposed to look like?

Honestly, I’ve seen $400 Certina and $600 Tissot pieces that outperform this in several aspects, and that’s without even bringing Tudor or Omega into the comparison, both of which compete at half/third price points with far stronger overall execution.

This was genuinely a shock to me. Am I being overly harsh here, or has Breitling really fallen this far?

I recently picked up a Longines HydroConquest, and I have to say, I’m genuinely impressed.

This is my very first watch from Longines, but the moment I put it on, I realized it definitely won’t be my last… (RIP wallet) I know the brand is often labeled as “entry-level luxury,” but honestly, I’m struggling to find any real flaws with this piece.

The design is clean without feeling empty. The colors are serious and refined, yet far from boring. The overall build quality is excellent, and the finishing looks flawless to the naked eye.

The L888.5 movement is another highlight. With regular servicing (around every 5 years), it’s basically a lifetime companion. The watch has a reassuring weight to it, and I’m quite sensitive to even minor discomfort on my skin, but surprisingly, I got used to it immediately. It wears very comfortably for me.

I have a relatively small wrist (17 cm), and I’ve been looking for a proper, masculine Swiss dive watch for a long time. Something with real presence but without costing a fortune. Until now, I always had to compromise: if the color was right, the size wasn’t; if the size worked, it had a quartz movement, and so on.

Of course, this is subjective, and I completely understand if someone prefers a different design. But for me, as someone who follows the watch world to a moderate extent, when I hear “dive watch,” these are exactly the proportions and design elements I picture.

As for the price, that’s always up to personal judgment, but considering the quality, the L888.5 movement, the micro-adjustable fold-over clasp, the polished ceramic bezel, 300m water resistance, and the 5-year international warranty, I honestly think it’s hard to beat, even at full retail. (Btw this isn’t a sponsored post, no one paid me to say this, I just genuinely can’t find anything to fault…)

Curious to hear what others think about it.
