Metformin progression

Just diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago and Dr prescribed 500mg of Metformin, follow up visit he increased the dosage to 500mg twice a day for 7 days and progress to 1000mg twice a day.

I know this is normal progression, but once you're on 2000mg per day, what are the chances of them reducing the dosage if your are actively trying to manage thru diet and weight loss?

For the record 67yo male with A1C of 7.9.
