Being a daily sub in a district with schools with little or no support available to subs…

is starting to take a toll on my mental health. Especially after my sub assignment yesterday. I had to cover for multiple teachers who had to attend meetings. The last class that I had took the cake. Students hitting each other, shoving each other, not doing their assignments, being disrespectful towards me, yelling and so much more. There was an aide in the classroom, but she did absolutely NOTHING to help me manage the behaviors of the classroom. I wrote a note to the teacher, the students were so nosy, that I had to leave it in her mailbox in the main office so they wouldn’t steal it off her desk.

No matter what techniques I tried, absolutely nothing worked. One of the top worst days of subbing which I have ever experienced. While I have the option to not return, I’m running out of schools closest to me to add to my “do not return” list.

The other schools (I work in a large district), would require me to travel 30+ minutes to work and back. I just need another job, but the job market is some garbage now. I work for Kelly Education also, so that doesn’t help.

Hello, I was wondering if there are any current students or recent alumni who can give any insight about the Master’s in School Psychology program.

Thanks in advance.

This may be me at the end of the school year. Worked as a substitute teacher since I was an upperclassman in college. The position has ruined my mental health, the position is the definition of wage slavery.

Also, screw these racist ass, extremely ignorant teachers and office staff members who work at some of these schools. As a Black woman doing this at schools in predominantly white areas, I hate this. Being othered sucks so much. Being treated like I am a criminal when I arrive to some schools (happened as recently as last week, I showed up to a school and despite me ringing the bell, one of the school staff members stared at me while I rang the bell). Started to just leave after that.

If the job market wasn’t so trash, I would have BEEN QUIT as I planned to last summer.

If schools are closed during a snow storm or any other type of inclement weather, they won’t even pay you (if you’re a daily sub, was not informed of this rule, ever) or provide any type of emergency financial assistance. That was the tipping point for me.

All of that B.S. for $18.00/hr. and then $20.16/hr. after I graduated from college. Clocking out for lunch as a sub was just a freaking ridiculous rule also. Couldn’t even pay a damn daily rate. Also, it should be illegal for school districts to make people pay for a background check without reimbursement at the least.
