Got an oil change at V-oil quick oil change shops… they didn’t put any oil in my mom's car 😐
So my mom mentioned her car was leaking oil, but she had to drive from DFW down to Houston that morning. When I checked it, the oil level was still sitting around the middle between min and max on the dipstick. I was jet lagged and honestly didn’t feel like crawling under a hot car in Texas heat, so I figured I’d just take it to a quick oil change spot to top it off and see if anything obvious was loose.
Pulled in, they did their thing, and when they finished, they told me the leak was coming from the oil filter housing. Not ideal, but I figured whatever—I already paid for the service and didn’t want to deal with it right then.
After that, I pulled out and sat in the parking lot for about 15–20 minutes with the car idling while looking up parts on my phone before driving home. On the way, my wife asked me to stop by McDonald’s, so I did.
While waiting in the drive-thru, I randomly thought, “Let me just double check the oil level real quick.” to compare the oil level observed in the morning just out of curiosity.
Dipstick = completely dry. Like… bone dry.
Immediately called customer service, opened a claim, and the store manager reached out. They’re saying their policy is to tow the car and take it to their “approved” third-party mechanic for inspection. Since it’s Sunday, they want to tow it back to their shop first and then send it out Monday.
Now I’m sitting here wondering:
- How much damage can 15-ish miles with basically no oil actually do?
- Even if it seems fine now, am I looking at problems later?
- Should I trust their shop to inspect it or get my own independent inspection?
- What kind of compensation have people actually gotten in situations like this?
The whole “we’ll take it to our approved mechanic” thing has me a bit skeptical.
Car is a 2015 Lexus LS 460L.
Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Did issues show up later or was it fine? And how did the claim/payout process go?
Appreciate any advice 🙏
