Does a more stable network setup reduce weird edge-case issues?

Still experimenting, but I’ve noticed when I keep things consistent (same routing, same patterns), I get:

fewer captchas
fewer login prompts
more predictable behavior

When I switch things around a lot, the opposite happens.

Has anyone else noticed stability improving when you reduce variability in your setup?

Why do websites randomly start asking for more verification?

Over the past few months I’ve noticed more sites asking for:
captchas
email verification
“confirm it’s you” prompts
Even on devices I use daily.

Nothing obvious changed on my end.

Is this just modern web security tightening, or does connection behavior (networks, timing, etc.) play into this more now?

Inconsistent connections for streaming

Traveling recently and noticed:

Same device, same account, same connection method.
Netflix works one night, blocked the next.

No changes on my end.

Is this just IP reputation fluctuation, or something else going on?

Travel setup question: consistency vs flexibility

When traveling, I’ve started prioritizing consistency over switching endpoints constantly.
Jumping between hotel WiFi + different VPN servers seems to increase detection (streaming + banking).
Keeping one stable exit point feels more predictable.
Is that generally the right approach, or am I overthinking this?

Same VPN server, different results depending on location?

Was in a hotel last week and noticed something odd.
Same VPN server, same device, but:

Netflix blocked one night, worked the next
banking flagged login once, then didn’t

more captchas during the day vs late night
Feels like it’s not just IP, but behavioral patterns + network consistency.
Curious if others have seen variability like this while traveling.

Speed over consistency?

After testing a few providers, I’m starting to think stability matters more than raw speed.

A slightly slower but consistent connection feels better than one that fluctuates.

Is that what others are seeing as well?

I’m still learning, so apologies if this is basic.

A lot of advice online focuses on apps (VPNs, antivirus, browser tools), but recently I’ve been seeing more discussion around network-level setups (router configs, DNS filtering, etc).

Is the idea that protecting at the network level covers more surface area? Or is it just more of an advanced option for the same outcome?

Trying to understand the “why” behind this shift.

I’ve been reading a lot about OpenWRT and I’m tempted to flash a spare router just to understand things better.
Main things I want to learn: traffic control / monitoring , better firewall rules , maybe integrating VPN at router level.

I’m not trying to build anything crazy yet, just want to understand how much control I actually get vs stock firmware.

For those who started the same way, was it worth the learning curve?

Hey all,

I’ve been slowly upgrading my home network with a focus on privacy/security, but I’m not sure if I’m stacking too many things.
Right now I’m running:

ISP router (bridge mode)
Separate router with basic firewall rules

Looking into DNS-level blocking + possibly a VPN router setup

My goal is simple: reduce tracking + keep devices protected without killing performance.

At what point does this become overkill for a normal home user? Curious what others are running as a “balanced” setup.

VPN app: easy setup, more blocks, more captchas

Router-level: harder setup, overall felt more stable, less detection for me

Not scientific obviously
Just my experience after testing both

Feel like streaming sites got WAY more aggressive lately…

VPN app on my phone = instant block sometimes but weirdly router-level setup seems to get flagged less for me
Could be placebo honestly
Anyone else notice this?

I have the opinion that Free = you are the product. Therefore a free VPN = you are making the company money somehow…

But what about a free subscription to a vpn service? I am a big fan of deeper and bought their device, and now I have free vpn for life, but i bought the device. So I cannot access their network without buying a product, so I don’t think i am the product, I am the consumer.

I think intent is important. And free sounds good when it’s for the right reasons.
