Made a deckbuilder, burned out. Now I'm back, with another one: Crownbreakers! It is fast, snappy, and dynamic and the KICKSTARTER IS LIVE!

Too long, don't want to read? Check out the Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sharkbombs/crownbreakers/

I'm Martin, a solo indie dev and it's been a while since I last released a video game: In 2019 I finished Nowhere Prophet, my first big PC game and a roguelike deckbuilder set in a India-inspired post-apocalypse. Because I did most of the work by myself it's no wonder it took me five years to build it. Unfortunately that ran me right into burnout, so I had to take a few years off from game development... But now I'm back and excited to show you Crownbreakers: my fast-based deckbuilding card-brawler!

It might be the ADHD or just the way my brain is wired but I really love the crunchy puzzles that card-based games let me solve. My brain gives me dopamine when I figure out the right cards and the best sequence for the current turn. So of course I'm an avid Magic: The Gathering fan (Red is the best color, fight me!) and I love deckbuilders... Unfortunately many feel just a tad too sluggish for my taste, with those long 90+ minute runs.

So I've spent the last 3 years combining everything I've learned from Nowhere Prophet with my desire for a fast-paced card game to build CROWNBREAKERS. It's a mixture of tactical turn-based combat, deck-building synergies, and side-scrolling brawler action. I know it's sounds like a wild mix, but believe me: it works!

What makes Crownbreakers different?

Knock em Dead
A big part of the gamplay is to use KNOCKBACK! Push enemies (and obstacles) around to:

  • get them into position to make the most of your area of effect cards
  • crash them into each other to deal extray damage
  • shove them into obstacles, like explosive barrels, to generate powerful chain reactions!

Keep Pushing
Destroy enemies, build up momentum and ADVANCE into the procedurally generated battlefield. Why?

  • It reveals new obstacles and hazards for you to play with!
  • It's needed to make you way to the boss!
  • And it reveals treasures and rewards!

Build as you Go
Crack open these treasures to BUILD YOUR DECK WHILE YOU FIGHT! So, how does that work?

  • You break open treasures to add cards (and relics and stickers) to your deck!
  • You can scratch and scrap cards to cycle them or remove them from your deck!
  • Other effects (like relics or enemies...) can add, remove or modify your deck!

Why Crowdfunding?

The game is currently in alpha: All the important mechanics are built, even if some part of the game still need a facelift. At the moment I'm focusing on adding content to the game: Cards, relics, stickers. Luckily I was able to secure funding for Crownbreakers' development, but as you can imagine, all I have is an indie budget.

So the goal of the Kickstarter campaign is to supplement the budget to let me pay some talented freelancers to add more features, more content, more art, more music. In exchange the campaign will offer exclusive rewards like becoming immortalized as a part of the game itself or getting early alpha access before the game releases!

I'm especially looking forward to the alpha as I'm excited to show off everything the game has to offer! I've been working on it for a while and I want to make it as good as I can, and I think input and feedback from players is essential to help get me there. I'm just one person so more perspectives and insight are invaluable...

Thanks so much for taking the time to read!

Hey folks! I'm the solo dev behind roguelike deckbuilder Nowhere Prophet, and I'm currently building Crownbreakers, which I call a turn-based card brawler. You can check out the DEMO for it right here!

At this point, I've built most of the systems and have been shifting the focus of my work over to content creation. And working on that for the past weeks and months I noticed I would really benefit from having someone to spar with. Making content (cards, relics, stickers, enemies, bosses, levels) is hard enough by itself, and doing it in your own echo chamber does not make it any easier.

I've got a budget and I am looking for someone (on a freelance basis) to talk about content, help design it, implement it and playtest it. Significant experience with deckbuilders is required. I need someone with opinions and perspectives to test my ideas against, someone who brings their own ideas, and helps me make sure all cards work in concert.

If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, let me know!
