I’ve been using a Vernal standing desk as a study setup for my teenager, and it’s actually been great for helping them stay focused during longer sessions.
One small issue I’ve run into is with the anti-collision feature. They tend to keep books or a storage bin under the desk, and when lowering it back down, the desk sometimes stops because it detects those items.
It’s not a huge deal, but it does interrupt the flow a bit since they have to move things out of the way each time. I’d prefer to keep the desktop clear for studying, but also make it easy to switch between sitting and standing.
Curious how others handle this? Do you keep the space under your desk completely clear, or have you found good under-desk storage solutions that don’t interfere with movement?

My son is turning 14 soon and one of my favorite things about him is how much energy he has. Always moving, always into something, genuinely curious about the world. My wife and I have always tried to channel that into good things rather than let it go to waste in front of a screen.

This summer we have robotics camp lined up for a few weeks in June which he has been looking forward to for a while, and swimming a few times a week to keep him active and social. Good foundation but we are always looking to layer in more, stuff that gets him outside, keeps his mind and hands busy and does not involve a phone and watching twitch streams.

He has been asking about electric scooters lately. I am into the idea. It gets him outdoors, gives him some independence around the neighborhood.

However wife and I have some hesitation. It is mostly around safety because I don't know this space well enough yet to feel confident about it. I have made a list of safety gear. Helmets, elbow and knee pads, wrists guards.. anything else I am forgetting?

Most importantly, are there specific things to look out for with the roads or the riding style that new young riders tend to get wrong early on?

For context: I've been looking at the Hiboy S2 as a starting point. The price feels reasonable for something I'm not 100% sure he'll ride every day, and from what I've read it seems okay for neighborhood riding without being overkill for a kid his age. My son is around 5'2" and would mostly be on bike paths and quiet streets near the house, nothing intense.

And I believe I have to ask, do you think is it a good choice that I am giving into the idea of a scooter or should I divert his attention elsewhere? I would love for this to workout honestly cause I am thinking of taking it for a spin as well not going to lie but safety first.
