Foreign culture special interests: especially Japan or Russia

I've known a lot of autistic people over the years who had a deep and long standing interest in a specific foreign culture and the most common have been Japan (me!) and Russia (a few close friends over the years.

I'm talking about immersion in the cultural practices, the language and the literature even if you never ended up travelling there.

Anyone else have this? Where are you from? (I'm European and native English speaker.)
