This place originally started out as a lodge, built in 1833 for a wealthy local family. Less than a decade later, in 1842, it was expanded and converted into a workhouse.

It was meant to house around 800 people, but like many workhouses during the famine, it quickly became overcrowded as more and more people arrived desperate for help.

Conditions inside were harsh, and a lot of people didn’t make it out. There’s a graveyard nearby with mass unmarked graves from that time, along with a memorial to those who died there.

The workhouse eventually closed in 1942, and since then it’s been left to decay, standing today as an empty shell.
