Fun fact: Magic erasers CAN remove the anti-glare film on CRTs safely
For months I was thinking of what I had to do in order to bring a cheap Sony Trinitron I picked up back to life as the previous owners used windex on it. Then this evening I decided to try out a magic eraser damped in warm water making slow circular movements and sure enough comes out perfectly!
Total took me 10 minutes of carefully rubbing the screen slowly with a new thin magic eraser every 20 seconds as not to prolong the process and risk rubbing the film back into the glass.
Now it’s looks brilliant! Zero readability issues and everything is at a crisp 1600x1200.
Don’t listen to others, take a risk and try out the corner! Better than to take apart the entire thing, used alcohol/heat gun, then after hours of razoring the film off, use goo gone to remove the gunk.
*Not all monitors are created equally though, be cautious of course
