hi guys,
is becoming a solicitor in Ireland, and Dublin more specifically, worth it? How's the job market? Which sectors are doing well and which sectors aren't? Would love some advice on all this.
For a little personal context, I'm 23, just finishing up my English Literature degree at UCD and have been thinking about doing the Master's in Common Law at UCD afterwards. I'd be taking a year off to teach in Korea for a while so I'd be finished the master's at like 25/26.
My interest in law mainly came from reading articles about jurisprudence in law journals as part of the research for my dissertation on Derrida's legal philosophy. From there I started doing past paper exam questions in my spare time and found that I enjoyed writing on the law far more than literary analysis. But I've heard the job market is rough, apprenticeships are few and far between, and that anything short of a 1:1 bachelors with a matching master's in law is basically doomed to failure.
So how would I stand with a 2:1 in English Lit and a first in the MCL at age 26? Would a year of teaching in Korea be a black mark against me? Does an English degree help? Should I just apply for internships with a 2:1 English degree and pray that someone takes a chance on me?
Any help at all would be appreciated, thanks guys.
