Am I crazy for wanting to buy a 30 year old car as a daily driver? I've been researching these like crazy and I really like them. Found a clean example thats in my budget but i'm getting anxious thinking about all the things that could go wrong with the thing. I'm excited to learn as I go on servicing the vehicle but i'm scared i'm being stupid to buy this as my only vehicle. What can I expect out of a '96 4runner as far as time in between maintenance and service/ what should I expect to replace/ fix?

Any and all input is appreciated

I got flamed like crazy yesterday so I decided not to scrap her. In all honesty, i'm not mechanically inclined in the slightest. I intend to learn but I have little time with work. Grandfather swapped the tail gate with his 02 ranger since the handle didn't work but left the rest alone if anyone wanted to buy it for parts/ resurrect it. It has around 199,000 miles on it and the engine went while I was pushing it pretty hard down the highway and I've neglected an oil change for a few weeks cause i'm dumb. Fucked around and found out so now i'm scrambling to find something new to get me to work, oh well. That being said, if you're in/ around Rochester, NY then you're welcome to message me about it if you're interested. The frame is pretty rusty but not rotted as far as I can tell. I can always send more photos if needed whenever I get back out to my grandfathers.

My 09 Ranger finally went. Engine seized up going down the highway. Can't say i'm surprised, but still disappointed. Had her since graduation and now she's off to get scrapped :((

Has a rebuilt transmission and an engine swap since the guy before the seller didn't maintain it well. Also has a whole bunch of other off-roading mods I'm too green to fully understand what they are. The full list of everything is in the description. The frame is extremely clean, which is what caught my eye since i'm way up north in the rust belt. If I go through with the purchase I intend to undercoat the hell out of it.

I'm mainly worried about all the mods effecting the reliability of it, as well as the rebuilt transmission and engine swap. The seller said the current engine that was swapped into it has around 230,000 miles on it so the odometer isn't fully accurate. He also mentioned an engine cap or something that leaks but supposedly doesn't affect the engine. Not sure what thats about. Also the lower ball joint on the passenger side went so he repaired both sides. I'm wondering if even though he fixed it if that could have caused wear/ damage to something else when it went.

As much research that i've done, its all pretty overwhelming and i'm not super knowledgeable about cars in general. I really just need something reliable but more fun than a Camry, and the old school 4runners really just seem to hit different.

Any help is appreciated.

Has a rebuilt transmission and an engine swap since the guy before the seller didn't maintain it well.

Also has a 2.5" lift with bilstein shocks and OME springs, along with a whole bunch of other off-roading mods. Newly installed calipers, rotors and pads in the front. Brand new tie rods, rack and pinion bushings and front upper and lower control arm bushings.

The frame is very clean with only surface rust which is was really caught my eye. I'm just worried about all the mods effecting the reliability of it, as well as the rebuilt transmission and engine swap. Also I know the 3rd gen 4runners are durable but idk about that price for how many miles.
