[BEGINNER] How to start transcribing and analyzing music by ear?

Heyo everyone! How are you doing today?

I’ve been a musician for almost three years now, mainly as a guitar player. I was also a piano player as a kid, so I already had some background in music theory and performance. But only now am I starting to feel the need to learn music theory properly, so I can improve my playing and composition skills.

I really like “weird” music genres: emoviolence, skramz, chaotic hardcore, jazz fusion, post-rock, midwest emo, math rock, and the list could go on and on... By “weird,” I mean genres that are not very mainstream.

And sometimes I find myself in a position where the songs I want to play or study do not have any tablature or sheet music available, so I need to rely on my ear.

This is where the title question comes in: how do you start analyzing and transcribing music by ear? And how do you train that skill?

My goal is to be able to compose in those genres and better understand scales, modes, progressions, and patterns.

(Just a quick note: please do not say things like “just analyze it,” “just play it,” “just learn the songs you like,” or “just transcribe it. I honestly don’t know how to do those things yet, and I really want to understand them more deeply)

(random image to upload video)

I tried create a 'heavy shoegaze' tone, more likely being a shoegaze with more bassy sound.

I used Reaper as DAW, guitarix and reaper native plugins. (it's only 1 stereo layer). Tried use EQ, Compressor and Limiter.

(Please roast it)
