Crockett, you're too good, buddy! We aren't even 6 months into the year, and Charley has given us two signature albums, with Clovis arguably his best work since The Man from Waco, if not ever.
"The Eagle and the Crow" = Banger of the Year
"Top Hand" = Ballad of the Year
"Albuquerque Lights" and "Country Music" = Solid Gold
"Don't Take Your Guns To Town" = Clutch Cover of the Year (but Ella is close with "Honky Tonk Angels"
At first I thought this would be one of my least fav tracks on Clovis, and I kinda drifted mentally when it would come on, sandwiched between the album's two best bangers: Eagle/Crow and Country Music.
But it was earworming its way in that whole time like the simple, seductive little ballad it is. Last night it echoed in my head for hours and I think it might ultimately be my fav track on Clovis.
Vocally it pushes our guy into territory he doesn't often visit. He's controlled and his voice sounds reflective and beautiful.
10/10, solid country gold!
