Folding bikes manufactured in China and imported into Canada.

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time researching the ebike and folding bike market here in Canada, and I wanted to hear some honest opinions from people in the community.

I’m based in Vancouver, and it feels like urban commuting, compact living, and mixed transit lifestyles have become much more common over the past few years — especially for condo living, office commuting, and city riding.

At the same time, many folding bikes and ebikes manufactured in China have improved a lot in terms of design, build quality, and components compared to what people used to expect years ago.

Because of that, I’ve been thinking about whether there’s room in the Canadian market for things like:

  • folding bikes
  • lightweight commuter ebikes
  • urban cycling products

manufactured in China and imported into Canada.

What I’m honestly curious about is whether people are still interested in these kinds of products in the current market.

For example:

  • Do people care more about price or brand reputation?
  • Would being a Chinese brand matter to you?
  • How important are local service and repair support?
  • Are folding bikes still considered niche in Canada, or is demand actually growing?

Still very much in the research stage right now — not trying to aggressively promote anything, mostly just hoping to hear real opinions from riders and commuters here.

about last week

I wanted to share something that happened last week, because it genuinely made me concerned about the current healthcare situation in Metro Vancouver.

Last week my daughter had a fever and cough that lasted for about three days, so we decided to visit the Richmond City Centre Urgent and Primary Care Centre on No. 3 Road.

When we arrived, the staff told us they were already full for the day and suggested that we go to the Richmond East Urgent and Primary Care Centre instead.

We drove there immediately and luckily were still able to get in, but we still waited around two hours before finally seeing a doctor.

While we were waiting, another middle-aged man came into the clinic. He had gone through the exact same situation — first visiting the Richmond City Centre Urgent and Primary Care Centre, then being redirected to this location.

Unfortunately, this time the staff told him there were no spots left there either.

What really stayed with me was that his finger was clearly cut and bleeding, and he looked like he was in significant pain, yet he was still turned away.

At that moment I honestly wondered — in a situation like that, is the only option to go to Richmond Hospital?

It also made me curious whether people living in Metro Vancouver without a family doctor are regularly experiencing situations like this.

The whole experience felt unsettling, and honestly a bit worrying in terms of access to healthcare right now.

about folding bikes

Not sure if this kind of post is allowed here, mods feel free to remove if needed.

I’m based in Richmond and have recently been getting deeper into folding bikes and urban commuting. I’ve also been thinking about starting a small project related to folding bikes.

Just curious if there are people here interested in folding bikes, lightweight commuters, or ebikes?

Would also love to hear people’s thoughts on the local bike market. Mostly here to learn and connect, not trying to hard sell anything.
