Physician Associate role in NHS — nursing perspective and career outlook?

Hello everyone,

I’m exploring NHS career pathways and would really appreciate views from nurses and healthcare staff on the Physician Associate (PA) role.

  • How is the PA role working in clinical teams (wards / GP / hospital)?
  • How is it viewed from a nursing perspective?
  • Would you consider it a stable and worthwhile NHS career option in 2026?

Would really value honest frontline perspectives. Thank you all

Is Physician Associate a good Career choice ?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering a career change into healthcare and looking into the Physician Associate (PA) role in the UK.

I would really appreciate honest advice from people with knowledge of the NHS or healthcare careers.

  • Is the Physician Associate role considered a stable long-term career in the NHS?
  • What is the general job outlook and future of the role, especially with recent regulatory changes?
  • For someone entering via an Access to HE (Health/Science) route, is this a realistic pathway?
  • Would you recommend this career compared to other NHS healthcare roles?

Just trying to make a realistic decision before committing to training. Thank you for any advice.

Physician Associate (UK) pathway — Access to HE entry, career prospects and stability?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering the Physician Associate (PA) pathway in the UK and would appreciate honest guidance from current students or practising PAs.

  • Is Access to HE (Health/Science) generally accepted as an entry route for PA courses?
  • With recent GMC regulation changes and ongoing NHS discussions, how do you realistically see the future scope and stability of the PA role?
  • Would you still recommend the PA route in 2026?
  • Also, does prior healthcare experience (e.g. 5 years in UK care sector) strengthen applications significantly?

Trying to make a realistic decision based on long-term stability and family commitments.

Would really appreciate genuine insights. Thank you.
