Anti doomscroll hacks for when your brain is completely dead after work

I work in tech and by the time I get home my brain is basically gone. Like genuinely no thoughts left. Every piece of advice online is always “go for a run” or “read a difficult book” and I’m like… I can barely microwave dinner right now

The problem is when you’re exhausted, your brain still wants stimulation. So you open TikTok/Reels/Reddit “for a few mins” and suddenly it’s 11:47pm and you’ve consumed 900 videos and somehow feel worse than before.

A few things that actually helped me:

Don’t touch the couch first.

This is the biggest one by far. The second I sit on the couch with my phone, my night is basically over. It’s actually insane how automatic it is.

Now when I get home I force myself to do literally anything before sitting down. Shower. Change clothes. Eat dinner standing at the counter. Even laying on the floor for 10 mins works better somehow lol.

Once I fully “settle in” with the phone, it’s game over.

Another thing: charging my phone in another room.

Sounds dumb but genuinely works. I leave it charging by the kitchen sometimes and suddenly the friction of having to physically walk over there is enough to snap me out of the automatic scrolling loop.

I also realized I needed to stop replacing scrolling with “productive” stuff.

After work, my brain does NOT want self-improvement. It wants easy entertainment.

Movies weirdly helped a lot. Especially slower comfort movies with actual stories. It scratches the same “I want to mentally check out” itch without frying my attention span. Same with historical fiction books honestly. Dramatic enough to stay interesting but still way healthier than infinite scrolling.

Another thing that helped was replacing scrolling with low effort audio learning instead of trying to force myself to read heavy books at night.

Lately I’ve been using BeFreed a lot for this. It’s basically a very fun bite size audio learning app where you can type any topic you’re curious about and it turns it into short podcast style lessons. I made mine mostly psychology, social skills, random history stuff, productivity, etc.

What I like is it doesn’t FEEL like studying. Some of the voices are literally funny talk-show style narrations instead of robotic educational content. I’ll listen while cooking or cleaning and it weirdly gives my brain the same stimulation as scrolling except afterwards I actually feel better instead of mentally poisoned.

Also random tip: laying on the floor with no phone actually works. I saw someone mention it on Reddit and thought it sounded ridiculous. But when your brain is overstimulated, doing absolutely nothing for 10 mins weirdly resets you. Eventually your brain gets bored enough to want to do literally anything else.

Honestly I think the biggest realization for me was understanding that doomscrolling isn’t really about content. It’s about anticipation. Your brain keeps thinking the NEXT video/post will finally be the satisfying one. Slot machine energy.

Once I understood that, I stopped trying to “find better content” and focused more on replacing the feeling itself.

Still figuring this out though. Curious what everyone else does on days where your brain is completely fried.

a song you’ve played so many times but still hasn’t gotten old

helooo so I’ve been looping Juna, Terrapin, Self Control, and Scott Street lately and somehow they still hit exactly the same every time lol it’s weird because usually when I overplay songs I get sick of them fast, but some songs just permanently stay good no matter how much you listen to them.

just bored rn while waiting for smth so i want to chat for a bit. what's ur fave songs to replay again and again?

would love to check em out too!!

been replaying the same few albums lately and i js need something new. looking for songs to play at 2 AM. I like stuff that sounds atmospheric or emotionally heavy without being too loud.

would like anyhting honestly as long as it has that “staring out the car window thinking about life” vibe. Would love to try some underrated picks too, thanks!

Hello! I’m a college student currently looking for a remote/WFH job to help support my personal and school expenses.

I’m hoping to find something flexible since I’m balancing classes, but I’m pretty adaptable and willing to learn. My skills include:

  • Basic data entry & organization
  • Internet research
  • Microsoft Office / Google Docs
  • Basic photo/presentation editing (Canva)
  • Time management & meeting deadlines

I’m open to entry-level work, part-time gigs, or even one-time tasks. If anyone has leads, recommendations, or advice on where to apply, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

It arrived super compressed in the package, so I used a hair dryer to puff it back up
