Barefoot Running inquiry
Hey everyone,
A few months ago I read the following book: Born to run by Chris McDougall.
To be frank, it completely ignited a passion for running, and I’ve running away on and off ever since!!
He talks about the Tarahumara tribe of Mexico, who run ultramarathon distances for food, traditional games, and for the love of running, all whilst doing it in bare-minimum shoes (sandals).
McDougall mentions how less supportive shoes equate in a stronger lower body. He gives the example of how in Kenya, they don’t wear shoes until around the age of 18 (someone can fact check). He questions why so many runners suffer lower body injuries, and argues that cushioned shoes encourage heel striking.
I talked with my dad about this, who is a doctor, and he was somewhat skeptical. The book came out in 2009, new scientific evidence has most come out since, and running shoes have been designed to support your feet and ultimately benefit you as much as possible. My father did say there was a lot of truth to McDougalls ideas, but that the truth is a bit more nuanced.
A few questions:
What does current evidence say about minimalist vs cushioned running shoes for injury prevention?
Has newer research supported or challenged the idea that minimalist shoes are better for runners?
For those who switched to minimalist shoes or barefoot running—did it actually reduce your injuries, or just change them?
Thanks!
