Recently, a PIL was filed seeking mandatory menstrual leave for women. Later it was rejected by the supreme court of India.
I am going to give my views on this topic and how can we move forward.
✓Problems in the way :
Employers may question women's efficiency and commitment capabilities and this could lead to discriminatory hiring practices and delayed career progression.
This could increase social stigma and psychological problems for women at workplace which could increase feelings of insecurity among women and take form of benevolent sexism.
It may also lead to strengthening of regressive notions that women are less productive and less capable than men and are more fit for household work.
✓ Scientific perspective: Not all women are same and thus don't feel same level of periods. Some experience very high pain and some don't feel any kind of pain. I did a rough google search for an idea which showed that only 10-25% women feel high level of pain. So, according to me, giving all women same treatment will be unjust.
✓Unorganised sector will be ignored: As usual, majority women who works in Unorganised sector like agriculture and house help will be ignored and they will not get benefits of such policies. They cannot risk losing jobs due to such policies. Most probably, even the women who gets the benefit of such policies will hesitate to give paid menstrual leave to their house help or labourers.
✓ Global Experience: Such mandatory menstrual leaves are already implemented in many countries like Spain, Korea, Japan. Still, women hesitate to take leaves due to social stigma and discrimination at workplace and risking their career.
✓ National experience: Even trends in Maternity leave given in India shows same thing. Women are naturally given second preference due to marriage and child responsibilities. 1 day menstrual leave was implemented in Karnataka but implementation was very poor and women are not availing benefits due to fear.
✓Way forward :
Focusing on making the workplace environment more supportive and secure for women instead of mandatory menstrual leaves.
Providing dedicated rest rooms, hygienic menstrual products and medical assistance to women at workplace
Offering Work from Home and flexible work hours options to women so that they can work according to their individual needs
If possible giving them, some temporary leaves according to need which they can compensate in future working days.
In this way, without passing any rigid mandates and taking extreme steps, we can empower women without reinforcing gender stereotypes or creating barrier in their career. This will enable women to engage fully and equally in workforce while safeguarding their health and well being.
I am open to constructive criticism and debates and i am sorry in advance if i said anything wrong.
This is the booklist i have prepared on basis of youtube videos and this sub. I have tried to keep my resources very concise so that i have enough time for revision. Please have a look and suggest me any changes that i should make. AND AN IMP QUESTION: I am confused what is old/new ncert in history. Should i read new or old ones. Please tell me this in detail of you know.
My strategy: i will start in few days. First i will start with Polity + Eco. First reading(ncert >standard book) > second reading + notes making > attempt all pyqs. Then i will repeat this for Geo + History and Art/culture + Environment. Everyday i will try to read newspaper. Also i already have a pretty solid base because i have cleared ssc cgl this year. So i am expecting that i will be able to complete all this till dec26-jan27. Then i will start my mains preparation for next whole year. I will give 2028 attempt. Suggest any kind of changes o can make in this.
