I'm a US 14, 4E. Not many running shoe options for me. I'm pretty much always in New Balance 860s. I just upgraded to the v15s. They're great, but a bit too heavy to run 5Ks/intervals in.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for fast shoes? Especially those that go up to US 14?

I (30's M, 210 lbs, 6') usually wear a US 14, 4E wide shoe. I have a hard time finding shoes that fit. I also overpronated a bit and usually end up in stability shoes. I'm pretty consistent at maintaining a midfoot strike.

I'm training for a half marathon (goal time sub-2) and got recommended New Balance 860v15 at the store. I went with them and they're fantastic. Extremely comforatble, fit like a dream, and actually come in my size. Been really enjoying long runs and easy runs in these.

But I've started going to a parkrun every few weeks to vary my training. The 860's are great for my form, but by the end of a fast 5k, I feel like the weight is really causing my feet to drag. In my size, each shoe was 450 grams.

I already know I'm never going to find the ultra-fast race shoes in my size, but I'm wondering if it's worth getting a slightly lighter, cheaper pair of shoes for tempo/speed work. I went to an ASICS store and tried GT-1000 (14), GT-2000 (14), and Gel-Kayno (32) (all the ones they had in 14 4E at the store). All seem to fit me nicely.

Some questions for you all knowing shoe geeks:

  1. Would it make sense to buy a lighter shoe?
  2. If so, would you limit it to 5K/speed work, or would you consider wearing the lighter ones on race day?
  3. What types of shoes would you recommend I look at? Do any of the ASICS make sense?
