Dr told me African Americans can’t get lice
I went to the urgent care today because I was in contact with a friend who had lice and have given her a hug two days ago. I’ve been very anxious because I’ve never been around any who has had lice before. I call several lice clinics and they all tell me they can’t even examine my head because I have locs and they wouldn’t be able to provide treatment. I call the urgent care and they said they can do the inspection. Immediacy the clerk, the triage lady all tell me that I’m probably fine because I’m black and we don’t get lice. (They are black)
The dr comes in (white) and she is very skeptical of me having lice as well. She says, “ not to be racist but your kind don’t get lice” I’m immediately hurt. She examines my head for a total of 30 seconds (I’m expecting like a 30 min examination because of my locs) and she says I don’t see anything I’ll prescribe you medicine.
I know I can get rid of whatever now if I do have it cause of the medicine but the dismissiveness and racism really bothered me. I’m sure there are black people who have lice.. just wish it was taken more seriously and not as some comedy for the day.
