It might be possible to put the summer windshield back on. What do you think?
Small country road are the best
Argonne American Cemetery - Romagne-sous-Montfaucon
📄 I’ve included photos of the official decree in the post
In the Semois Valley, the N865 road between Dohan and Mortehan is now closed to motorcycles during the summer period.
📅 Period:
→ from May 1 to September 30, 2026
→ except for local traffic
📍 Area:
between Bouillon and Bertrix
⚖️ Stated reasons:
- speeding issues
- dangerous riding behavior
- noise pollution
- accidents
👉 Goal: improve road safety and preserve local residents’ quality of life.
🏍️ Personally, I always saw this road as a great riding spot, and this decision brings up the usual debate:
should everyone be restricted because of the behavior of a few?
💬 I’d be curious to hear your thoughts:
👉 necessary safety measure or excessive decision?

Being a biker, is it being free?
It was following a post by Valootre on Twitter (or should I now say X.com following the name change) that the idea for this reflection came to me: "Does being biker is to be free? In addition, the weather at the beginning of August in Belgium encourages reflection.
Being a biker is much more than a simple leisure activity, it is a way of life that gives rise to many reflections on the notion of freedom. The motorcycle embodies the idea of freedom, escape and independence, thus attracting many enthusiasts who see in this practice a way to stand out and free themselves from the constraints of everyday life. But does this enthusiasm for motorcycling really reflect a search for freedom or is it just an illusion?
In this article, we will explore the different aspects of the biker life in relation to freedom. We will examine how the motorcycle can be perceived as a symbol of freedom, both physical and mental, but also how it can imply certain constraints and responsibilities inherent in the practice of driving.
We will start by highlighting the call of the road and the wind, often used by manufacturers to highlight their models, this feeling of freedom that the motorcycle provides during solitary rides on winding roads or in the heart of a wild nature. We will also discuss the benefits of motorcycling for those looking to explore new horizons, escape routine and break free from the limitations imposed by conventional means of transport.
However, being a biker is not only synonymous with absolute freedom. We will discuss the safety rules and the highway code that motorcyclists must comply with to preserve their safety and that of other road users. This ethical and responsible dimension raises the question of the balance between individual freedom and duties towards society.
Continuing our reflection, we will examine the material and meteorological constraints faced by motorcyclists. The challenges of riding in rain, intense cold or scorching heat can alter the sense of freedom and test the resolve of riders.
Beyond the technical and practical aspects, the motorcycle is also a social vector that promotes the creation of links between motorcyclists. We will discuss the biker community, the gatherings and events that nurture a sense of belonging to a family united by the passion for motorcycling. However, this will raise the issue of individual freedom versus group membership and collective values.
In conclusion, we will analyze the different dimensions of the life of a biker in relation to freedom and answer the question: "Does being a biker mean being free?" We will highlight that the freedom of the biker is plural, that it can be at the same time physical, mental and social, but that it is also accompanied by responsibilities and constraints. Motorcycling is an adventure where the quest for freedom and the need to find a balance to live your passion fully while respecting others and the environment.
Motorcycling, a passion for freedom
The motorcycle, often presented as a true icon of freedom, exerts an irresistible attraction on many individuals in search of adventure and thrills. Beyond a simple means of transport, the motorcycle represents a way of life where freedom is combined with the rhythm of two-wheelers. In this section, we will explore in detail the aspects that make motorcycling a passion for freedom.
The call of the road and the wind:
For any motorcyclist, getting on his motorcycle is much more than a simple mechanical action, it is a ritual imbued with freedom. Once installed on his machine, the motorcyclist feels ready to explore the world that awaits him. Starting the engine awakens a feeling of power and autonomy, while the wind caressing the face with each kilometer traveled symbolizes escape and a break from the daily routine.
The motorcycle allows you to escape from everyday life by taking picturesque roads, crossing breathtaking landscapes, and discovering places off the beaten track. The feeling of freedom is palpable during long solo rides, when each bend becomes an invitation to adventure and the unknown.
The advantages of the motorcycle to explore new horizons:
Unlike cars, motorcycles provide a direct connection to the environment around them. They allow motorcyclists to live every moment to the full, to appreciate the variations in the weather, and to take advantage of the landscapes which pass by at a moderate speed. The maneuverability and lightness of motorcycles also facilitate access to remote or difficult to reach places, thus giving motorcyclists the opportunity to discover unique and preserved places.
In addition, the bike promotes meetings and exchanges with other road enthusiasts. Rest areas, service stations, or biker gatherings become places of conviviality and exchange where people share their experiences, their adventures and their common passion for freedom.
A sense of power and independence:
Riding a motorcycle provides a feeling of power and independence. The motorcyclist is master of his machine and decides his own trajectory. This autonomy reinforces the feeling of freedom, because it is not enclosed in a protective bubble like in a car. The motorcycle offers a unique sensory experience where engine noise, vibrations, and proximity to the road amplify the feeling of freedom and connection with the road.
In addition, being able to weave through traffic jams or park easily in tight spaces allows the motorcyclist to gain mobility and flexibility, thus escaping the constraints of urban traffic.
A means of escape and emancipation:
For many motorcyclists, the motorcycle represents a means of escape and emancipation from the constraints of everyday life. When they put on their headphones, they free themselves from the worries of work, family responsibilities, or the hassles of everyday life. Motorcycle riding offers an outlet, a time when the mind is free, where one can live in the moment, and concentrate on the unique experience of the road.
The motorcycle undeniably embodies a symbol of freedom, attracting enthusiasts seeking adventure and independence. It offers a unique driving experience, where the rider is in osmosis with the road, the wind, and his environment. The motorcycle allows you to escape, to discover new horizons, and to feel in control of your own destiny. However, it is essential to recognize that this quest for freedom also comes with responsibilities and constraints, which we will discuss in the following sections.
The constraints of the biker
Who says freedom, says constraints! If the motorcycle is often associated with freedom, it should not be forgotten that this passion also comes with certain constraints and responsibilities. In this section, we will discuss the various constraints that motorcyclists face during their practice.
Highway Code and Safety Rules:
Driving a motorcycle implies compliance with traffic rules and the rules of the road. Motorcyclists are subject to the same obligations as motorists in terms of respecting speed limits, traffic lights, priorities, and overtaking rules. These regulations aim to ensure the safety of all road users and to prevent accidents.
Motorcyclists must also adopt responsible driving, constantly paying attention to the road and anticipating the behavior of other road users. The use of safety equipment such as helmets, gloves, and suitable clothing is essential to minimize the risks in the event of an accident.
Weather conditions :
Unlike motorists who can be protected from the rain, cold or heat by the passenger compartment of their vehicle, motorcyclists are directly exposed to the vagaries of the weather. Driving in the rain can make the road slippery and reduce visibility, which requires adaptation of driving and increased vigilance. Similarly, riding in cold weather can be taxing, while hot weather can be exhausting, especially on long journeys.
The weather conditions can therefore limit the freedom of the motorcyclist by imposing constraints on the way he rides and sometimes encouraging him to postpone or cancel his plans for rides.
Hardware Constraints:
Motorcycling requires specific equipment which can represent a significant financial investment. In addition to the helmet and protective clothing, riders should also ensure regular maintenance of their motorcycle, including servicing, oil changes and tire condition. The ever-increasing costs of fuel, taxes and insurance and maintenance can therefore represent budgetary constraints to be taken into account. And I'm not talking about the cost of the motorcycle itself, which often exceeds the price of a car. It is also good to remember that when you love you do not count, but the material budget constraint should not be underestimated.
Responsibility to Self and Others:
Riding a motorcycle requires a certain amount of personal responsibility. The freedom associated with motorcycling should not obscure the risks inherent in riding on two wheels. Motorcyclists must be aware of their limits, avoid taking unnecessary risks and adopt careful driving to preserve their own safety and that of other road users.
Moreover, as ambassadors of the biker community, individual behaviors can have an impact on the image of bikers in society. It is therefore essential to drive in a respectful and responsible manner to promote better coexistence with other road users.
So being a biker is not just about the quest for freedom, but also generates constraints that are important to take into consideration. Observance of traffic rules, vigilance in the face of weather conditions and maintenance of the motorcycle are all aspects that allow motorcyclists to preserve their safety and fully enjoy their passion while respecting others and the environment. It is by finding a balance between freedom and responsibility.
The social dimensions of motorcycling:
This is an aspect that I hesitated to develop, but in the age of easily accessible media and social networks, I had to talk about it.
Beyond the individual aspect, the practice of the motorcycle generates social dimensions which contribute to reinforce the feeling of freedom and to support a strong feeling of belonging to a community. In this chapter, we will explore the different social dimensions that make motorcycling more than just a solitary passion.
The biker community - between sharing and solidarity:
The motorcycle creates a strong bond between its followers, thus forming a real community. Bikers share a common passion for the road, adventure and freedom, and this creates strong bonds between them. Gatherings, organized rides and events around the motorcycle offer the opportunity for motorcyclists to meet, exchange anecdotes and share their experiences.
Within this community, mutual aid and solidarity are strong values. Motorcyclists support each other in the event of a breakdown, difficulty on the road or even in everyday life. This solidarity often transcends social barriers, differences in age or nationality, thus creating a feeling of belonging and inclusion within this large biker family.
Sense of belonging to a specific community:
The motorcycle can be a means of defining oneself and belonging to a particular group. By choosing this unique mode of transport, motorcyclists often identify with a specific lifestyle and values. This can lead to the emergence of subcultures within the biker community, with groups sharing preferences for certain types of motorcycles, particular riding styles or common interests. We are not talking about gangs or the like, but often joining only one brand of motorcycle allows you to identify with the owners of this brand.
This community spirit can also be expressed through badges, badges, and logos worn on bikers' clothing, often representing membership in a club or a group of enthusiasts.
Biker Rallies and Events:
Whether you like to participate or not, rallies and events dedicated to bikers are privileged moments to strengthen ties within the community. Biker gatherings, fairs and thematic meetings bring together thousands of enthusiasts who come to share their love for motorcycling. These events promote exchanges, discoveries, and offer the opportunity to create new friendships. But sometimes, certain events harm our image by the excesses of some (alcohol, dangerous driving to impress the gallery, breakers, etc.)
Group rides are also very popular with bikers. Riding in a convoy, surrounded by other motorcycles, creates a friendly atmosphere and reinforces the feeling of belonging to this community united by the common passion for the road and freedom. I'm not a fan of group rides, preferring to ride alone in order to make the most of the road, but I always enjoy meeting up with our friends during or at the end of the ride to share a good moment of conviviality between friends and enthusiasts. .
The impact on the perception of motorcycles in society:
The social dimension of motorcycling can also influence the perception of this practice in society. By coming together for charity events, fundraisers or solidarity actions, bikers demonstrate their commitment to society and help improve the image of the biker community among the general public.
However, it is essential to note that this social dimension is not systematic for all motorcyclists. Some like me, prefer the solitary practice of motorcycling, while others do not necessarily adhere to rallies and clubs. The diversity of profiles within the biker community reflects the multiplicity of motivations and individual experiences related to motorcycling.
The motorcycle is much more than a simple means of transport, it creates a real community of enthusiasts sharing a common love for the road and freedom. The social dimensions of motorcycling reinforce the feeling of belonging to this great biker family, promote exchanges, and testify to the mutual aid and solidarity that characterize this unique community. This social dimension of motorcycling contributes to enriching the motorcyclist's experience, by offering him the opportunity to create lasting links and to share his passion with other enthusiasts.
The biker faced with the constraints of modern society.
In a constantly changing world, motorcyclists must face certain specific constraints linked to modern society. These challenges affect different aspects of motorcycling and impact both the freedom of riding and the image of the motorcycling community. We will explore the constraints that bikers face in the context of contemporary society.
Urban mobility challenges and traffic jams:
In densely populated urban areas, mobility by motorbike can prove to be an undeniable advantage. The ability to weave between cars in traffic jams provides freedom of movement for riders, allowing them to avoid long waits. However, this practice can also cause tension with motorists who may perceive this mobility as a violation of traffic rules.
Urban developments can also present a challenge for motorcyclists. Certain obstacles, such as speed bumps, poor road surfaces or poorly synchronized traffic lights, can make city driving more difficult and reduce the feeling of freedom usually provided by the motorcycle.
The lack of guarded motorcycle parking lots also reduces the feeling of freedom, for fear of having your precious mount vandalized or stolen.
Environmental regulations and their impact on riders:
The growing awareness of environmental issues has led to the adoption of increasingly strict regulations vis-à-vis motorized vehicles, including motorcycles. More stringent emission standards and restrictions on access to certain urban areas may limit the freedom of movement of motorcyclists and make it more difficult to use certain models of motorcycles that are less environmentally friendly. It is an attack on individual freedom of movement.
However, some riders see electric motorcycles as a promising, more environmentally friendly and quieter alternative. These new technologies can represent a solution to meet environmental challenges and reconcile passion for motorcycling and respect for the environment.
The image of bikers in society:
The image of motorcyclists in society can be influenced by certain persistent prejudices and stereotypes. The media and popular culture have sometimes conveyed a negative image of motorcyclists, associating them with dangerous behavior, speeding or illegal behavior. These representations can contribute to a misperception of the motorcycling community and damage the image of motorcycling in general.
However, many initiatives are put in place by the bikers themselves to improve this image and show their commitment to road safety and the environment. Awareness actions, prevention campaigns and rallies for charitable causes are all ways for motorcyclists to demonstrate their responsibility and their positive contribution to society.
Technology and distracted driving:
The ubiquity of smartphones and electronic devices can pose a danger to motorcyclists. Distracted driving is a growing problem and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of inattentive motorist behavior. This reality forces motorcyclists to be even more careful and vigilant on the road, while reinforcing their determination to promote road safety.
Modern society brings its share of constraints for motorcyclists, whether in terms of urban mobility, the environment, social image or road safety. Nevertheless, the biker community strives to meet these challenges by adopting a responsible approach and seeking appropriate solutions. By remaining united, united and committed, motorcyclists can preserve their freedom of driving while being responsible actors and respectful of their environment.
Being a biker: a personal quest
Motorcycling goes far beyond a simple leisure activity. For many bikers, it represents a personal quest, a search for meaning and inner freedom. Let's now explore the different dimensions of this personal quest and how motorcycling can become a means of personal fulfillment.
Connecting to yourself through motorcycle riding:
Riding a motorcycle can be a meditative experience for some riders. When they are on their two-wheelers, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, they feel connected to themselves, to their emotions, and to the environment around them. Riding a motorcycle requires increased concentration and sustained attention, which can allow the rider to live fully in the present moment and enter a sort of state of flow where everyday concerns fade away. A simple motorcycle ride is worth all the therapies for me.
The motorcycle also offers a space for reflection and contemplation. Many riders view their rides as special times to take stock of their lives, make important decisions, or simply release stress and worries.
Overcome Fears and Limits:
For some riders, getting into motorcycling can be a personal challenge. Riding a motorcycle requires a certain technical mastery and can raise fears related to safety. However, overcoming these apprehensions and learning to drive with confidence can be a source of personal fulfillment.
The motorcycle can also push riders to push their limits. Exploring new roads, facing difficult weather conditions or participating in biker challenges are all opportunities for bikers to step out of their comfort zone and surpass themselves.
Finding a balance between independence and belonging:
Being a biker allows you to live a form of independence and freedom, choosing your routes, escaping far from the constraints of everyday life and connecting to the road and nature. However, this quest for freedom often coexists with a desire to belong to a community, to share one's passion with other bikers and to be part of a biker culture.
Finding the balance between this independence and belonging to a community can be a rewarding personal quest. Riders can thrive celebrating their individuality while bonding with other road enthusiasts.
The motorcycle as a source of inspiration and transformation:
For some riders, the motorcycle acts as a source of inspiration, creativity and personal transformation. The motorcycle can become a metaphor for life, where the obstacles on the road reflect the challenges of everyday life. The ability to overcome these obstacles on a motorcycle can give riders a sense of accomplishment and resilience that carries over into their life off the bike.
In addition, the biker culture can carry values that influence the way bikers approach their lives. The sense of sharing, solidarity and open-mindedness are all values that can be adopted and cultivated by bikers.
So being a biker is often more than just a hobby, it's a personal quest that encompasses spiritual, emotional and psychological aspects. The motorcycle offers a space of inner freedom, reflection, and self-transcendence. It allows riders to connect with themselves, push their limits and find a balance between independence and belonging. Beyond the technical and practical aspects, the motorcycle can become a means of inspiration and personal transformation for those who fully embrace this passion for the road.
To be a biker is to be free?
The question of whether being a biker is synonymous with freedom raises many thoughts and dimensions. After having explored the different aspects of the life of a biker in relation to freedom, it is time to conclude our analysis.
The motorcycle is undoubtedly a symbol of freedom for many enthusiasts. The feeling of physical and mental freedom it provides during rides on winding roads or in the heart of the wilderness is unmatched. The possibility of exploring new horizons, of escaping routine and living fully in the present moment reinforces this association with freedom.
However, this freedom also comes with responsibilities and constraints. Safety rules, traffic laws, weather conditions, material and budgetary constraints, as well as the impact of environmental regulations are an integral part of motorcycling. Being a biker therefore requires a balance between individual freedom and duties towards society.
The social dimension of the motorcycle is an important aspect to consider. The biker community, between sharing and solidarity, offers a strong sense of belonging and mutual support. Gatherings, events and charitable initiatives help to reinforce the positive image of the biker community in society.
Motorcycling goes beyond simply driving a vehicle, it is a personal quest for many motorcyclists. The motorcycle allows you to connect with yourself, to overcome your fears and limits, to find a balance between independence and belonging, and to inspire personal transformations.
To conclude, being a biker is much more than a passion for leisure, it's a way of life that combines freedom, responsibility and personal quest. The motorcycle embodies the search for physical and mental freedom, while inviting riders to face the stresses of riding and engage in a tight-knit community. For every motorcyclist, the motorcycle can become a way to explore their own essence, to connect with the essence of life and to discover themselves beyond the simple mechanical aspect of riding.
Whatever the perception of freedom for each rider, it is essential to recognize that motorcycling remains a passion that touches the hearts, minds and souls of those who fully embrace this two-wheeled adventure.
And my answer to the initial question is yes: for me being a biker makes me free and the practice allows me to escape from all the constraints of professional life and to recharge my batteries.
And you, are you free?
Personal Thought: Talking about my topic with my wife and SDS, riding with a passenger seeing a dog like we do is for her an attack on freedom. Like what there is still a lot to discuss on this subject. But let's stay there, the road is calling us.
