I’m looking to buy my first-ever road bike and am considering the Canyon Endurace AllRoad. I’m about 5'9/5'10 and would mainly use it for paved fitness rides, weekend rides, beginner group rides, and maybe some light gravel/mixed paths. I’m not trying to race, just want something comfortable, reliable, and worth keeping for a few years.

My main concern is that Canyon is direct-to-consumer, and since this would be my first road bike, I’m worried about fit, setup, and whether I’ll know if something feels “off.” I’m pretty sure I’m around a size Small based on Canyon’s sizing, but I don’t have much experience with road bike fit.

For people who bought Canyon as their first road bike:

  1. Is the Endurace AllRoad a good first bike, or would I be better off buying from a local shop, like a Trek Domane or Specialized Allez?
  2. Is Canyon’s assembly easy enough for a total beginner, or should I pay for Collect & Ride?
  3. If I do buy the Canyon, should I still bring it to an LBS afterward for a safety check and basic fitting?
  4. Is there anything specific I should watch out for with fit, sizing, or setup on the Endurace AllRoad?

I like the value of the Canyon, but I’m nervous that as a beginner, I won’t know how to tell whether the bike is properly assembled or whether the fit is wrong. Would appreciate honest advice from anyone who started with a Canyon or had to choose between D2C and local shop support.

I’m buying my first-ever road bike and would appreciate some advice. I’m about 5'9/5'10 and will be on the West Coast this summer, then bringing the bike back to the East Coast in the fall.

My budget is ideally around $1.2k-$1.8k, but I could stretch a little if it really makes sense. I’m mostly planning to ride paved roads for fitness, weekend rides, and maybe beginner group rides. I may ride some light gravel or mixed paths, but nothing too intense.

Right now I’m considering:

  • Trek Domane AL 2 Gen 4 (unsure because of Shimano Claris)
  • Trek Domane AL 4 Gen 4
  • Canyon Endurace AllRoad
  • Maybe Specialized Allez (with Shimano Cues)?
  • Open to other suggestions as well!

I originally considered the Trek Domane AL 5, but I’m wondering if that’s overkill for a first road bike. My main questions are:

  • Is the Domane AL 2 good enough for a beginner, or will Claris/mechanical disc brakes feel limiting quickly?
  • Is the Domane AL 4 the better long-term sweet spot because of Tiagra/hydraulic discs?
  • Is buying a Canyon D2C a bad idea for a first bike, especially since I won’t have local shop purchase support?
  • For someone splitting time between West/East Coast, would you prioritize local shop support over better online value?

I’m not trying to race. I mainly want something comfortable, reliable, and worth keeping for a few years if I end up riding a lot. Any advice would be appreciated, especially from people who started on a Domane AL 2/AL 4 or bought Canyon as a first road bike!
