What's a word you confidently mispronounced for years before someone corrected you in public?
reddit.comDid you ever have a word you mispronounced for years because you only ever read it, never heard it out loud?
I was 24 when I found out "epitome" is not pronounced "epi-tome." Like a fancy tomb. I had read it hundreds of times in books growing up and built an entire confident vocabulary around a word I had never once heard spoken.
The moment I found out was at a work presentation. I said it in front of twelve people. My manager very kindly waited until after the meeting to tell me. I still think about it regularly.
Apparently this also happened to a friend of mine with "quinoa" — she called it "kwin-oh-ah" at a restaurant for two years before a waiter gently corrected her mid-order.
Anyone else have one of these? The more embarrassing the better, it'll make me feel less alone
What is one thing you wish someone had told you before your worst relationship?
I had a good looking girlfriend, who knew that man like her. Everything was fine, our relationships went well and we were close to the wedding, but suddenly I had a call from her girl friend, in fact her best friend, who warned my that my girl friend has another man and she is treating me like a "nice quy", but no more.
I confronted my girlfriend with this information and this conversation ruined my life, because she denied everything and I understood that she is openly lying. It took me years to recover after this breakup and start trust people again.
