Pacifier and Ferber Method?

We are looking to start the Ferber Method next week with a 5-month-old baby. She used to fall back asleep if you put her pacifier back in. Since she has started rolling and now prefers to sleep on her belly, putting her pacifier in is much more difficult and rarely stays in. But when it's in, it does seem to help her sleep.

I've seen so many differing answers on this. My question is, can I put the pacifier back in at the timed intervals for the Ferber Method? Or does that defeat the purpose? I've seen some places say you can give it to them when they are initially falling asleep, but don't put it back in on the check-ins. I've seen other places say it's fine to do so. AND other places say not to use it at all? Thoughts? Experiences?

Can she still use it during the day/in the car? Even if she no longer uses it at night?

Is it possible to sleep train while room sharing?

Baby will be 5 months this week and looking to sleep train next week. Currently she sleeps in a pack and play in our room for the SIDS reduction. Is it possible to sleep train (thinking Ferber method) while she’s in our room?

Also, I’m new to this put per the information I’ve found here (https://www.whattoexpect.com/first-year/sleep/ferber-method-sleep-training/), you just do 1-2 minute check in’s at the predetermined intervals. Are these check-in’s just back patting and shhh-ing and then you walk out? If so, this seems nearly impossible while room sharing.

Thanks in advance.

ETA: Another question about the Ferber… sorry if this seems obvious, I am new to this! So let’s say baby has first wake up on day one at 1 am… you go in and do the 1-2 minutes of back patting. And then they cry it out and put themselves to sleep? And then the next interval check-in would start if/whenever the next wake up is (say 3 am) right?

Can someone please explain sleep training like I’m an idiot?

Baby is almost 5 months old and slept great until this week. She was a 12-14 hours of sleep baby and was always put down awake and could put herself to sleep. She started rolling in her Magic Merlin this week so we obviously had to get her out of that. We’ve now tried her in the Swaddle Designs transition, a regular sleep sack and the Zipadee. The only one that she seemed to get more than an hour of sleep in is the Zipadee. She also has a never ending cold from daycare, which isn’t helping.

She sleeps in a pack in play in our room. She also goes to daycare during the day so I don’t have much control over what her day looks like but I do think they do a decent job at following wake windows. She eats plenty during the day so I’m not sure if she’s waking up because she’s hungry all of the sudden (after not doing this for 3.5 months) or if it’s just that she’s startling herself awake because she’s not in her Magic Merlin and then decides she’s hungry. Since getting out of her Magic Merlin, she started waking up at 1 am and then around 6-7 am for the day. I can handle the one wake up a night and we did feed her at that time (breastfed through a bottle). When we feed her, she takes the full feed and goes right back to sleep so it seems more like a true hunger wake up rather than habit.

However, tonight she has woken up multiple times in the first hour and then about every 1-2 hours. I’m afraid this is going to become a pattern and she’s started the 4 month regression.

I don’t want to start habit feeding her or get to the point where bedtime is an hour process.

I don’t really know much about sleep training but I’d like to know everyone’s experience. I don’t think I could do a full cry it out but think something like the Ferber method would work for us? She’s still sleeping in our room for the reduction in SIDS risk but should we move her to her own room while starting this process?

As the title says, can you all explain what has worked for you (with specific steps)? Thank you so much!

Car seat recommendations!

FTM of an almost 5 month old and have several questions. Thanks in advance!

  1. When did you stop using your infant car seat?

  2. I have a 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander. Do you recommend a rotating car seat or a traditional convertible one? Regardless, which specific car seat is your favorite?

  3. If I were to get a bulkier either traditional convertible one or a rotating one to leave in our vehicles, what are some recommended ones that are less expensive and more portable that we could use for travel on airplanes, Ubers, etc.?

I apologize in advance for sounding clueless here! I have a 5 month old baby in an infant carrier. She’s on the smaller side.

How long did you all keep your baby in the infant carrier?

Also, as we look forward to convertible car seats… what does everyone recommend that’s easy to get kiddo in, safe and reasonably affordable? Also, what are the benefits of a rotating one? I know they take up a ton of room but I have a 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander with captains chairs so how much room are we talking here?!

Baby is almost 5 months old. She has been an amazing sleeper since about a month old, 10/10, no notes, chef’s kiss. She rolls frequently from back to belly during the day but not belly to back (at least that I’ve seen, but she’s in daycare during the day). She has great head/neck control and strength. When she first started showing signs of rolling, we stopped swaddling several months ago and she has since been in the Magic Merlin suit.

She sleeps in a pack and play next to our bed in the Magic Merlin suit. For reference, at daycare she naps decently in a crib and traditional sleep suit. Last night she woke up earlier than usual, likely because she has been stuffy and can’t breathe as well due to her cold, at around 4 am. She occasionally stirs but can usually go back to sleep if you pop her pacifier back in. Every once in a while, she’ll wake up once during the night and want to eat. So I tried her pacifier and let her stir a little but she must have been fully awake because she rolled onto her side and was close to laying on her belly, while in the suit.

Of course this freaked me out so I got her up to feed her and then put her in the Zipadee Zip sleep suit that we have. I saw online that if she rolls in the Magic Merlin, it’s time to stop.

How do you all deal with the transition to a more traditional sleepsuit? We’ve never really had to deal with her going back to sleep, because feeding her every once in a while or popping a pacifier back in was enough for her. She is always put down drowsy but awake and can put herself to sleep initially but now it’s 1 am and she woke up in her Zipadee Zip and I don’t know how to help her. I don’t want to start a habit of feeding her at 1 am when she isn’t hungry and have her come to rely on this habit feed. But putting the pacifier back in and patting her back didn’t work. I know I sound like an idiot but we haven’t had to deal with this yet and of course we thought we dodged the 4 month sleep regression 😭 does she just need a few nights to transition? How do I help her soothe back to sleep? How do I know if she’s truly hungry or just awake?

Edit to add: We stopped using a traditional swaddle when she started rolling several months ago. The MM is safe to use until they roll IN the suit. Also we are aware of the MM recall and ours does not qualify for the recall. Ours are older and were made before they were bought out by Halo, which are the recalled ones. We stopped using the MM cold turkey the second she rolled in it so I am just asking for what you used to help make the transition smoother. We went between the Zipadee Zip and the Kyte Baby sleep sack.
