Best way to train and get into competitive Smash?

Hey guys. I've been playing Smash since the N64 days and loved every game in the series. However, I always played Smash with friends, like a fighting party game (i think that was the main idea of smash at first) and never went fully competitive.

However, there is this tournament on May 23rd near my house. A friend of mine asked me to go with him so I said hey why not, worst case scenario I will lose $4 and get destroyed by the first guy I fight but I'll probably have fun. But... I don't really want to just pop in without any training. Of course, I won't become a pro in 2 weeks, but I thought that maybe there are some basics I could focus on. I tried the training mode but... I don't really see a lot of benefit from it, I usually spend tons of hours in training modes of games with long combos like FighterZ but for Smash it feels a bit weird.

So I wanted to ask you guys, what do you think I should focus on more during these 2 weeks? I dont really mind losing on the first round but I'd like to at least give my oponent a proper challenge. I won't have a lot of time to train the first week, but the second I plan to spend as much time as possible.

Also, I main Sora, Snake and Little Mac mostly. But I dont think Little Mac would be too good against competitive players, so I was planning on playing Snake mostly, if that helps.

I don't know if it ever released, but I remember it got announced I think during the game awards or something similar. The game promised that you'd be able to create your base like a maze of sorts, with traps all around. I think it was sort of like in the middle of the ocean or something, and another player would go in and try to go through all the obstacles in your base and (I think) kill you in the end. I remember it looked like a steampunk game or similar, it was like a borderlands kind of style but more realistic instead of cartoon and a bit more gore maybe.

I was never able to find it again, and it has bothered me for so long.
