Train adventure Luxembourg - Basel - Meiringen

We (adult and pre-teen child) decided to go from one small country to another, fully by trains.

July, 7 days.

Booked a train Luxembourg - Basel (aller-retour).

We will be based in Meiringen (5 nights). I've already read some bad reviews and a bit worried that it will be miserable haha. So I want to make sure that we compensate a bit on our "budget stay" in Swiss peak.

I still have to decide where to go on the first night and two last nights.

  1. Sleeping in Basel first night - good idea?
  2. where to spend last two nights to catch a train in Basel around 10.30 am? (Somewhere comfortable and decent, but not too expensive).
  3. which train pass to buy? Do we need to book in advance? We want to travel around by train from Meiringen.
  4. do we need to book any restaurants in advance? Is it really that expensive (in comparison with Luxembourg, Paris and Knokke for example)? I don't know if I want to cook every day haha.
  5. how to make holidays nice and not too tiresome given our agenda?
  6. any particular recommendations what to visit ?

P.s. we like active holidays, hiking, cycling, can walk easily 17km per day, and we like fresh températures.

Hi all,

Could you recommend a nice bycicle trip for a week or so. To do with a sporty child :) 12yo

Ideally train and bike only. Champagne, Moselle, Normandy ? In July or August
