Preschooler only eats a few safe foods, is this common?

My preschooler eats the same foods every day and refuses anything new. Sauce, mixed foods, strong smells, and weird textures are an immediate no.

I’m trying not to make meals stressful, but I’m worried about nutrition because fruits and vegetables are barely happening.

Did anyone’s preschooler grow out of this or did you have to work on it somehow?

How do you handle “safe foods” without making it worse?

My kid has a tiny list of foods he trusts. If I serve those, he eats. If I add anything new, even on the same plate, he shuts down.

I tried the “just one bite” thing and honestly it made everything worse. Now he gets suspicious even when I give him foods he normally likes.

I don’t want to trick him or hide stuff because I feel like that could break trust, but I also can’t keep serving the same beige foods forever and pretend I’m not worried.

For parents who had a super limited eater, did you keep serving safe foods? Did you put new foods nearby? How did you do it without constant crying?

My son has a very small list of “safe foods” and anything outside of that is basically a no. Sometimes he won’t even taste it, it’s like the food is already “bad” just because it looks different or smells different.

Mixed foods are the worst. Sauce touching something, two foods touching on the plate, a different texture than usual… instant refusal. Sometimes he even gags if I push too much or if the texture feels wrong to him.

I keep hearing “he’ll eat when he’s hungry” but that has not really been true for us. He would rather just not eat. And honestly I’m starting to worry because he barely eats vegetables or fruit and protein is hit or miss too.

I don’t want mealtimes to be a fight every single day but I also don’t want to ignore the nutrition side of it.

Has anyone actually dealt with this? Did your child grow out of it, or did something help them feel safer trying new foods?

Does anyone else’s kid eat like… the same 5 foods forever?

My child only eats a few safe foods. If a food looks different, smells strong, has sauce, or feels weird, he refuses it before tasting.

Sometimes if we push he gags, so I don’t want to make it worse. But I’m worried about nutrition because he barely eats fruits or vegetables.

What’s the first small step that helped your kid?

I always thought my kid was just being stubborn with food but I’m starting to think it’s more of a texture thing.

He’ll refuse food before even tasting it if it looks “wet” or has sauce on it. If something is mushy, slimy, mixed together, or has a strong smell he gets upset and sometimes gags.

It’s not even like he hates all junk food or all healthy food. It’s more like certain textures just freak him out. Even if I put a vegetable next to something he likes, he acts like the whole plate is ruined.

Has anyone had a kid like this? Did they grow out of it or did you have to do something specific?

I’m not trying to force him, but I’m worried because he barely eats fruits or vegetables.

Has anyone been through this? What helped even a little without making dinner a fight?
