When can I go back into the Schengen zone?

Hi,

*I know this probably gets asked a lot, but I’m finding mixed info online and would love help. If this is too annoyingly frequent it’s ok if it gets deleted*

I have been sitting here for hours trying to figure out this 90/180 Schengen thing, and I would love an actual person to help me understand.

I’m an American citizen with visa-free access to the Schengen zone as long as it doesn’t exceed 90 days in a 180 day period. I was in the zone between January 5th 2026 and March 26 2026, which is 79 days (81, but I spent 2 days in the UK).

When is the soonest I can go back into the zone (Spain), if I’m hoping to stay longer than the 11 days I have left out of the original 90?

This probably seems simple but my brain is totally fried. I’m not understanding the rolling 180-days window thing, especially because I know you don’t get all 90 days back at once on any particular day.

Hi!! I’m an American student hoping to walk the Camino this summer. However, I did a quarter abroad in France from Jan-March of this year, meaning I used up 80+ days of my visa-free allowance in the Schengen Area.

I’m applying for a short-term Schengen Area tourist visa at the Spanish consulate, and I have my appointment next week. I’m working on getting all my documents ready, but they want hotel reservations for every part of the trip. I’m planning to stay in public albergues so I can’t book those in advance. I’m planning to book the first day in SJPdP and probably a few days in Santiago, and maybe even a few hotels along the way to get a solid nights sleep (this will also depend).

Basically I’m asking if anyone has applied for a Schengen Visa for the Camino, and if so, how you should go about fulfilling this requirement and if this will cause problems. I’m sure the consulate has seen this before, but I’m just worried they will delay or decline my application because of this and I don’t have a ton of extra time to wait and re-do if it gets declined.

Thanks and buen Camino!
