The Camino changed my life in ways I never thought were possible

Hello lovely people,

I wanted to share a bit of my story.

For a long time I (28F)had this quiet feeling inside me that something in my life was not quite right. I could not explain it. From the outside everything looked fine, but deep down I felt like I wanted change. I just never thought that a completely different life would actually be possible for me.

I had already walked the Camino Portugues before, but then I decided to walk the Camino Frances.

And something shifted.

It was not just the walking. It was the silence, the long hours with my thoughts, the people I met along the way. It felt like something inside me that had always been there finally opened. I realized that I had been searching for something, even though I could not name it before.

The Camino did not give me answers in a direct way. But it changed how I feel about myself and my life.

After the Camino my life slowly started to change. I left my long term relationship. I changed my job. And for the first time in my life I started living alone.

Before that I would have never even considered these things as real options. I thought my life would follow a certain path. But the Camino showed me that I can choose differently.

It changed me deeply. In my mind and in my soul.

If you are thinking about walking the Camino, I just want to say this

Do it.

Everything you are looking for might already be inside you. Sometimes you just need the space to find it.

Lots of love,

Ella 🤍

Shells, shells, and more shells

I’m still daydreaming about all of the delicious scallops that I ate along the Camino.

Camino Portugese

Hey, yesterday I (M26) finished the Camino Portugués (Central Route + Spiritual Variant) in 12 days.

Normally I don’t post things like this, but this forum really helped me prepare and understand what to expect. So I wanted to share a bit about my experience, plus some tips on what I would do the same or differently next time. And yes there will definitely be a next time!

Shoes

I used my Brooks running shoes and they were perfect. The terrain isn’t that rough, so running shoes are totally fine. You can use hiking boots, but honestly I think they’re too heavy for this route.

Backpack

Make sure you get the right size. Mine was way too small (borrowed it from my mom..) , and by day three my back was hurting a lot. I ended up buying a new one and donated the old one to a hospital. Mother was fine with it ;)

Clothes

Keep it simple: a good rain jacket (just in case), a fleece, zip-off pants, 2–3 sports T-shirts, 3 pairs of socks and underwear. That’s really all you need. You can wash everything at the albergues. If you’re missing something, just buy it along the way. I met a lot of people carrying way too much, which just slows you down. And don’t forget one comfortable outfit and flip-flops for relaxing at the albergue.

Toiletries

Same as cloths bring the minimum. There are plenty of shops along the route if you need anything.

Blisters

I only had one blister. As soon as I felt something coming up, I stopped and taped it. That worked perfectly. The one I got on day 2 healed almost completely on the end of walk just by doing that.

Albergues

You can book most albergues in advance. You’ll almost always find a place to stay, but it’s a nice feeling knowing you already have a bed waiting for you.

Cash

In Portugal you’ll need cash quite often. In Spain you can usually pay by card. I’d recommend always carrying around 60–80 just in case. It’s annoying to arrive somewhere and then have to walk another 20 minutes to find an ATM.

Spiritual Variant

In Pontevedra you can choose the Spiritual Variant. It’s really beautiful and less crowded than the main route towards the end. The last part includes a boat trip (30) to Padrón. It adds an extra day, but I’d definitely recommend it.

Going alone

This was my first time traveling alone, and I loved it. I met so many people, heard great stories, and learned a lot about different cultures. I walked mostly alone because I enjoyed the silence and time to reflect. But in the evenings I’d often meet the same people again for dinner or just to hang out. People are very open, and it’s easy to connect. Even if I hadn’t met anyone during the day, I’d just ask someone at the albergue if they wanted to grab dinner those spontaneous evenings were some of the best.

I hope this helps someone preparing for their Camino. If you’re still doubting: just go. I can definitely recommend it. Buen camino!

Which lens for the Camino de Santiago?

Hi everyone!

In just a few days, I’ll be setting out on the Camino de Santiago (Camino Francés), and I’m beyond excited!

As always, I plan to take my Z6 with me.

My question, though, is which lens to bring.

Should I go with the 24–70mm f/2.8 for its versatility, or is the 70–200mm f/2.8 the better choice, especially for capturing those distant landscapes I’ll be seeing along the way?

i think that taking both with me will be a mistake, the whole gear will feel heavy and even heavier as the days pass by.

I’d love to hear about your experiences. What worked for you, and what didn’t?

Thanks so much!

P.s. My favourite lens is the 70-200 f/2.8

Cold nights?

Hi everyone. Starting my camino from Burgos this Monday and I'm wondering how cold the noghts are in the albergues. Do I need to bring thermal clithes in case there are no blankets? Or do 2 layers of shirts suffice? Or is it just normal temperatures with a blanket.

I bring a thin liner bag to sleep in.

Thanks!

I brought a thermol pants

Meals on the camino

Bit of a random one, but some of the private albergues I have booked have basic cooking facilities, and I am considering cooking some basic dinners whilst I am on the portuguese coastal camino to save costs (and also dont always fancy eating out).

However I was just wondering if anyone has any particular recommendations of things to cook with ingredients that are readily available in local shops?

Otherwise I fear it is going to be a lot of pasta and cheese (although think I will probably want the carbs!)

Building an app for Camino pilgrims - looking for 100 (or more!) iPhone testers walking the Camino Francés soon

Hi all - As a fellow pilgrim, I’m building WeCamino, a new app for Camino de Santiago pilgrims, and I’m looking for around 100 (or more!) iPhone testers (Android coming soon. Sign up now if interested!) to help test it before release.

The idea is simple: make it easier to stay connected with other pilgrims as you walk - see progress on the route, share moments from the trail, and keep up with friends even when you get split across stages.

It’s aimed at people who are:

  • walking the Camino Francés soon
  • using iPhone (Android coming soon. Sign up now if interested!)
  • open to testing via TestFlight
  • willing to give a bit of honest feedback

You can sign up here: www.wecamino.com

I’m also going to be in Burgos next month, so I’m hoping to get feedback from real pilgrims, actually on the trail, not just people clicking around from the sofa.

This is still early, so I’m not pretending it’s perfect. I’m trying to build something genuinely useful for pilgrims, and I’d love feedback from people who are actually walking.

If that’s you, or someone you know is starting soon, feel free to sign up!
