Are we all slaves,

Bondmen are we?

Deprived of the kiss of the sun,

The mountains, the sea?

We in Hades live,

Cut off from the stars,

The argent glow of the moon,

The splendor of Mars.

Year upon year you toil,

Beneath the heavens,

And above the soil,

All for what fruit,

All for what spoil?

Men, I know what we all seek,

From the brave Romans

To the ever clever Greeks.

Freedom, as free as the dove.

Without, to what purpose wealth?

To what purpose love?

Yea, they show us a dream so dear,

Yet is it none other than the cage we so fear.

Golden is its shine,

Alluring as wine,

But trapped are you, as am I.

5

Men, I know what you all seek,

From the bold and the brave,

To the cowardly and meek.

Spread your wings, never fear!

Without, to what purpose life?

To what purpose art thou here?
