Defective doorknob in my apartment led me to being trapped in my bathroom for over an hour.
Ignore the cardboard shoved into the wall, duck tape won’t stay on the door for some reason and I had to shove cardboard into the door wall because my cats were playing with the hole and the hole is extremely splinter-y and I didn’t want them to hurt themselves.
The other day I was using my bathroom in my apartment and when I was trying to exit the bathroom, the doorknob got jammed and wouldn’t open. I tried jiggling the handle, wouldn’t work, it was as if the door was locked even though it wasn’t. The doorknob and mechanisms are extremely ancient and rusted so it was probably just its time. It finally broke. I tried for an hour to get out, I didn’t have my phone so I couldn’t call anyone and my bathroom window screen doesn’t come off, plus my doors were locked so I’d still be locked out of my apartment. The screws for the doorknob were on the outer side of the door because the doorknob was installed backwards. Thank you, stupid landlord so I couldn’t unscrew the doorknob from inside the bathroom. After about an hour of trying to jiggle to the knob I had to punch a hole through the door but the hole was too small to climb through but I was somehow able to unscrew the doorknob on the other side, thankfully I didn’t hurt myself. After I unscrewed the doorknob it fell off but the mechanism was still jammed into the wall so I continued to try jiggling it to try to do unjam it but it still wouldn’t work so I found whatever I could find inside my bathroom to use it to smash the mechanism off and eventually it fell off and I was free and now my landlord is making me pay for the damages. Is this fightable or am I screwed? It’s a door, I can pay for it, but all-around it’s an unfortunate situation I feel like…
