“How the Fuck I Kill That Nigga and He Ain’t Kill Me” — an Analysis of the Poetic Genius of Playboi Carti

Ever since listening to the 2019 Playboi Carti masterpiece “2MANY”  one line has stuck with me for its power and poetic precision:

“How the fuck I kill that nigga and he ain’t kill me.”

This line brings to mind the relationship between chance and necessity.

Nietzsche, in his work, argues that the world is not unified by some underlying force akin to god. Rather the world is ruled by a multitude of forces which constantly seek to expand and assert themselves above other tendencies. Furthermore, anything which seeks to explain the chaotic nature of existence through a narrative or explanation is a denial of life.

This is what Playboi Carti is reflecting on, so eloquently in this line. He recognizes the inherent chaotic nature of existence. He understands that either him or that nigga could've died in their altercation, and only chance determined who survived. There is no reason why Carti was, in fact, chosen rather than his opp.

This existential angst is also amplified as Carti grew up black in the United-States where gun violence is prevalent, and the murder of black boys is all too common, and happens without reason.

The prescriptive element of Nietzsche’s philosophy urges us affirm as necessary this reality which emerges from chance without seeking a justification or a reason for it.

Carti is doing this exactly because he doesn't offer a reason why he is victorious.

It would be easy to retroactively say that Carti was the one who had to survive because he had to become an influential superstar which would change music forever.

But Carti doesn't do that, he emphasizes in the following line, that he didn't think too deeply about it. He didn't need a reason to justify why he lived, and his opp died. He simply affirms it. For Nietzsche this is the sign of a remarkable man.

In this way, the line functions both as a celebration and a lamentation.

This line is a testament to the greatness of Playboi Carti’s writing 🖤
