Is this clean enough?

I assume that the answer is going to be "if I have to ask, the answer is no"

First pic is the before shot of this ETA 2369 mvmt that I picked up on ebay as a practice before I ruin a real watch.

Once I got the trian wheel bridge off I found that there was some corrosion on several of the train wheels, and a lot of the bridges were practically glued down with old oil and dirt.

Pic 2 is after 2 full cleaning cycles through my ultrasonic setup (still dirty).

Pic 3 is after manually scrubbing with pegwood.

My current cleaning procedure is:

  1. Naptha - Ultrasonic - 10 min
  2. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 5 min
  3. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 5 min
  4. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 2 min

This movement went through that procedure 2x and still had persistent dirt on these wheels and on the barrel bridge (I assume there is subborn dirt elsewhere too).

My questions are:

  1. is this clean enough? Or does this need to run through again?
  2. Should I modify my cleaning procedure/ solutions as it seems the naptha isnt cutting the grease well enough? L&R is out of my budget right now but trust me its very much something I plan to upgrade to eventually.

I've seen people say aqueous solutions can be good for grease.

I was wondering if a 2 stage wash could be good something like:

  1. Aqueous Wash - Ultrasonic - 10 min
  2. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 5 min
  3. Naptha - Ultrasonic - 10 min
  4. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 5 min
  5. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 5 min
  6. 99% IPA - Ultrasonic - 2 min

And if i was going to use an aqueous solution what would you reccomend? Ive seen this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-SGm-nhGt8&list=PLvMdYdz6a-tElOsNLNR82Vy2RGAp1B1Ls&index=3 has a lot of good stuff for beginners and he says that a simple wash of distilled water and dawn

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Behr 55 Loupe

I managed to break a cheap clip-on triple loupe I had but then found this behr 55 following an online recommendation. It clips on much more securely and is proper old school top optical quality. £25 vs the normal £90+.

Confusingly the 2½/1 on the box is loupe numbers not magnification = 4x/10x used individually, which is perfect.

Highly recommended if you can find one at a decent price.

Lathe tailstock

I believe this tailstock is used for drilling holes into stock that's chucked in the headstock. Can someone confirm and kindly explain how it's used? Fyi- I've tried and it appears collets can fit into this tailstock and be tightened with the drawbar. If it's used for drilling, what do I need to hold drill bits in this? Thank you!

Poising result after filing balance wheel

Hi, a few days ago I asked about approach to poising after dynamically measuring a poising error on a 1940s watch.

https://www.reddit.com/r/watchrepair/comments/1srnxa9/poising_1940s_rolex_how_to/

I went for it and filed away some weight from the heavy spot, and later moved the timing screws out a quarter turn to make up for the weight loss.

Did it in small steps, remeasuring, trying to balance the risk of repeatedly removing & replacing the balance wheel, vs taking away too much material.

Dramatic improvement! It went from 600 seconds positional variance to around 10.  And as a bonus, the remaining 0.2 beat error that I was going to leave is now zero. Thanks for the help.

Any idea on how to install a mainspring without any type of winder?

Ive been struggling on getting this st36 to run well. I installed a brand new spring and it mustve been installed incorrectly because I felt it slip in the barrel.. Is it possible to reposition the spring in the barrel without having to pull it out and rewind it?

Tip: if you have the indian cleaning machine. Buy this voltage/speed regulator.

Main issue with indian ones is the speed knob which is super sensitive. Gets fast very quick.

This little device gives more control to the speed plus it has an off button so you can safely shut off the machine when done. It is around 20 bucks depending on country

Reliable AI. Not.

Used Google picture to find out which movement I had. Even ordered a new stem to replace the broken one. Wrong stem next to the broken one.

Nope, wrong one.

Did some more searching and it turns out that I have what I now believe is an ETA 1129 movement.
