Hi, quick question. My mom passed away last year and we;ve been paying her bill for about half a year. Mom didn't use her cell much and was already on their cheapest plan, which is still like $18 after tax monthly. We called Fido and unfortunatelly was told she was already on their lowest tier plan and nothing much they can do.

We'd like to keep mom's cell # as her viber and whatsapp is tied to it and my understanding is cancelling the plan could risk her number being assigned to a new person

Any advice on severices that offer a simple way for us to park her number indefinately.

A small annual fee is fine.

Thanks.

I've been using VoIP.ms for a few years now. Messaging has always been annoying. Groundwire works, but only for SMS, so I had to turn on email notifications not to miss any long messages/MMS. Now I get double notifications for a single message, and I have to cross-reference the phone number from the email with my contacts. It's... annoying.

There's an app for Android, but not iOS, so I made one for myself. I've been using it for the past few months and I'm quite happy with it. I figured I might as well polish it up to make it public, too.

Some screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/ke0487T

2 things people might care about:

Privacy: I've made the app as private as possible. It only talks to the VoIP.ms API. There's no telemetry. For push notifications, I built a proxy server to forward URL callbacks to Apple's Push Notification service. The only thing sent through the proxy is your device token. I can't see the message content, the sender or the recipient. When a notification arrives, the app fetches the actual message directly from the API.

Cost: The app will stay free during TestFlight, but the push notifications server costs money to run, and I'd like to at least cover the expenses. I like donationware, but I'm not sure if I'll get enough donations to cover the cost. A more practical solution is to make push notifications a paid feature. I'm hoping TestFlight will help me figure out how many users there'll be and what the server costs will look like. If I go that route, the subscription would likely be around $5/year at most, less if there are more paying users to share the cost.

Please don't solely rely on this app while in beta. Things might be broken. There are still a few rough edges, and I'm hoping people can help me catch more bugs before launch too.

Long story short, Telus was way too much and I got a much better deal with intl calling with Freedom, however they were unable to port my Telus 807 number because my original number is out of their domain

I am looking to maintain my Telus (807) number for a short time frame, especially with all the 2FA that I can only try to switch all of them over in a timely fashion. Plus drs offices, etc.

Is VOIP.MS a good solution? Would it receive texts/calls, and even voicemails? Looks like pricing is about 2$ a month, and I really wouldn't get many calls or texts. Just check it once or twice a week and specifically check it if i need to switch a 2FA to my new number. TIA, sorry for the dumb question but this is a very new concept to me, I really didn't expect I would need to switch numbers until it was too late

A month or so ago, I received one of those educational emails from Voip.ms regarding caller ID filtering and how one could turn on STIR/SHAKEN filtering. So I created a filter that required STIR/SHAKEN compliance as a means to hopefully reduce the spam calls that I received. After enabling it, I didn’t think anything of it and was happy that I stopped receiving spam calls. But I then started thinking about it further this past weekend after realizing that I haven’t received ANY calls in about a month. So I then tried calling myself with my T-mobile cellular line and got a busy signal. I tried my wife’s work cell which is on AT&T and I tried my work cell which is on Verizon. None of them went through. I checked online and T-mobile states they are 100% STIR/SHAKEN compliant. I tried it again by relaxing it to the 2 other levels (B/C), and I still was not able to get through.

I setup the caller ID filter as described in the wiki. DID Number > Caller ID Filter > create a new filter, which I applied to all DIDs (I only have 1). Are there other steps that I need to take to make this work?
