Two Sacramento hospitals at risk of closure due to cuts within Trump's Big Beautiful Bill

Eighty-three hospitals in California are among 446 across 44 states and Washington, D.C., facing a heightened risk of closing, cutting services or laying off workers due to federal medicaid funding cuts, according to a new report.

These 446 at-risk hospitals collectively have 68,986 beds and served approximately 6.6 million patients in 2024. They employ approximately 275,458 direct patient care workers (this does not include non-medical workers, such as administrative staff).

Using census data to identify community demographics for each hospital,[5] We found that the communities served by these at-risk hospitals have a larger share of Black and Hispanic residents, as well as people living below the poverty line, than other hospitals. At-risk hospitals served communities that were 20% Hispanic and 13% Black, on average. For all other hospitals, the communities served were 13% Hispanic and 9% Black.

At-risk hospitals’ service areas also have a larger share of people living below the poverty line (16%) compared to other hospitals (13%). Nearly 20% of the at-risk hospitals (85) serve high-poverty areas.[6]

Looking for summer housing

Looking for summer housing in the Ventura area. My budget is $700 (ik, ambitious). I don't mind the arrangement; I just need somewhere to stay from June 20 to early August.

Single 44 male looking for friends

Finding it a weird time to be dating.. Most of my close friends have families and the few single friends sometimes don't want to go out.. So I find myself hanging alone quite a bit lately.

I sell real estate, own real estate, have a couple of outdoor hobbies that I love, I enjoy yoga, beach or trail jogging, I go a couple times to the gym a week, I love the beach, love the mountains, I enjoy going out and meeting people.

Been on and off of dating sites, so over them at this point. I know there's good people out there just finding it a weird time to to meet them.

Interested in a drink, coffee, food, message me.

local spay and neuter clinics?

i know there’s several in ventura county, but sparc and the humane society seem to explicitly refuse to spay or neuter designer dogs/certain purebreds that weren’t rescued to differing degrees. the thing is is that my sister recently sort of rescued a french bulldog puppy (she took the puppy home from a really shitty breeder who was going to use her as a breeding dog if no one bought her) and she was hoping i could find them a low cost clinic where they could get her spayed since they don’t have a lot of disposable income, but all the clinics i’ve found so far apparently will refuse to help them since their puppy is a frenchie and they didn’t get her through a rescue. does anyone know of any somewhat low-cost place that would agree to spay their puppy in the area? i get why these organizations have these restrictions, but they could really use any kind of lower cost spay/neuter service and it’s just unfortunate that they want to do the right thing and spay their puppy but the local clinics won’t help them due to the way they rescued her or just because she’s a frenchie. thank you in advance!!

New pastry vendor advice

Hi, I’m hoping for some help and any info as I’m looking into what it would require to be a seller at farmers markets and/or events (like salsa festival, etc.) where I would get my own tent.

I know I would need a class A CFO as I’d be selling directly to the customer and not to a business, but would there be anything else?

What are the average prices you’ve paid to be at events or farmers markets?

Any advice or info is much appreciated!

I looked up some info online, but the responses on google were sort of mixed.

Need a reputable bicycle repair shop

I don't mind paying for good service as long as it's not a complete rip off. Does anyone have a reputable bicycle repair shop they could recommend? I live in Oxnard but I'm not opposed to driving to Camarillo thousand oaks or Ventura for a good shop.

Vintage book appraisal and valuation

I found an old book at an estate sale and I looked it up on eBay because the more I looked at it the more it seemed very well take care of and very high quality for its age and timeframe

It's from the 1880-1910's from my research and eBay sold comps are few but in line with the listed value of the 2 others listed on eBay.

I want to take it to someone local for an actual value. We're talking maybe close to $4000 so I'm wanting to know for sure.

Is anyone local I can take this book to to check out?

PSA: 1st Amendment Auditors outside Trader Joe's Camarillo today

There were some 1st amendment "auditors" outside Trader Joe's in Camarillo today. These three were pretty aggressive. I've seen other "auditors" before who hang back and try other tactics like wearing masks to bait people. These guys today were shoving cameras in peoples' faces and making it difficult for carts to leave the store by standing on the sloped exit ramp. Couple of tips for y'all:

(1) Yes, filming in public as they do is legal. They are usually careful to stop just short of crossing the line and have spent some time learning the laws. Don't argue with them about this; they will post it for views and so it gives them money.

(2) They may get aggressive and are will try to antagonize you. At other locations they have followed people to their vehicles and filmed them through the vehicle windows, or followed them to another store. Ignore them until they break the law.

(3) The cops will not get involved until someone does something illegal. If the cops get involved before then, the "auditors" get a huge financial boost from number of views, and there is a potential lawsuit against the city for violating their 1st amendment rights. So don't call the cops or threaten to call the cops. It just encourages the "auditors" to antagonize you more. Don't tell them you don't consent to filming or anything similar; just drives up that view counter.

(4) Generally, don't engage. If you see someone getting angry and feel you should step in, best thing to do is to avoid saying anything. Just walk over and play "Let It Go" on your phone. Really, anything Disney will do, but Let It Go is so thematically appropriate. Once that music is playing in the background, they can't post their video segment on most social media with its audio, because the Big Bad Mouse will order it taken down to protect copyright.

(5) Another tactic to defuse a situation is to start asking stupidly innocuous questions. Like "Hey, nice hat, where did you get it?" They'll probably film you and say "I don't have to answer that!" Just respond "Oh, I know, you have rights. I was just curious and thought I would ask. Oh by the way, do you know how to get to the nearest Thai food restaurant?" And so on. This is not the content they want, and you are eating up their time and batteries. Don't ask anything that they could possibly twist around to use as content (nothing about their camera, or where they live, or why they are filming, or anything insulting to them). This can give another person the chance to cool off and just walk away.

And remember, if you run across these "1st amendment audit" videos on social media, they are heavily edited to make it look like the "auditor" is peacefully minding their own business, then suddenly all of these Karens/Darrens get up in their faces. These "auditors" are not heroes or Robin Hoods, they are not sticking it to the man, and they are definitely not "educating the public".

Should we be wary to protect and defend our rights? Sure. These guys aren't. They're doing it for the views.

Hope this helps, and I hope you don't run into these parasitic jackasses.

Mother of 2 boys killed in Ventura County crash offended by prison letter

"Nancy Iskander, whose two young sons were struck and killed by a vehicle driven by Ventura County socialite Rebecca Grossman in 2020, says she recently received a message from Grossman requesting a visit in prison.

Grossman is currently serving a 15-year sentence for the hit-and-run deaths of Iskander’s children. In a social media post, Iskander said Grossman asked her to witness the difficulty of life behind bars and referred to herself as a 'victim' in the situation.

'I’m still trying to process how someone could make such a request,' Iskander said.

The contact came as a wrongful death civil trial against Grossman began Monday. Grossman was previously fined $10,000 for sending a private letter from prison that a judge said could be interpreted as an attempt to influence the civil case.

The court had already warned Grossman against contacting the victims’ family while the legal matter remained pending.

Grossman was convicted in 2024 of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of Jacob Iskander, 8, and his brother Mark, 11. The boys were crossing a street in a marked crosswalk in Westlake Village with their parents and siblings when they were struck.

In her post, Iskander said she would trade places with Grossman without hesitation to have her sons back.

'While I can only imagine how difficult her life behind bars must be, the truth is this: I would trade places with her in a heartbeat,' she wrote. 'I would live in any prison cell, under any conditions, for the rest of my life, if it meant my beautiful boys could be alive again, laughing, dreaming, growing up and chasing every beautiful future they deserved.' Fixable?

Just purchased a used car this week and didn’t notice til I got home a chip on the passenger side of the windshield.

I called a mobile tech to fix it but he said it’s already been filled and he can’t re do it. (google says some techs with experience can maybe repair it)

As you can tell, it was horribly done.

It’s a pricey windshield to repair as it needs to be calibrated. Looking at 1200 for oem and calibration.

Can anyone refer me to some one who can fix this in the Ventura or LA County area?

Man convicted of raping woman he was dating while they were vacationing in Southern California

"A man was convicted of raping a woman he was dating while they were vacationing in Southern California.

Christopher Baum, 59, of Fairlawn, Ohio, was convicted by a jury of one felony count of forcible rape, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced on April 15.

On Oct. 14, 2018, Baum and the victim were staying together at a hotel in Oxnard while traveling in SoCal.

After an argument earlier in that day, the woman went to sleep and was awoken in the middle of the night to find Baum on top of her, prosecutors said. He pinned her arms down and raped her despite her pleas to stop.

. . .

After the assault, Baum eventually fell asleep and the woman, who was experiencing significant pain, went to the restroom where she took pictures of her injuries.

She flew back home and reported the incident to friends and the Oxnard Police Department.

When she sought medical treatment, she said she discovered she had herpes and that Baum had lied to her about the results of a test for sexually transmitted diseases, the outlet reported.

She sought medical treatment for bruising and injuries sustained during the incident and was also given an STD test. Days later, she found out she had tested positive for herpes.

In court records, the woman said Baum had sent her a text message denying he had an STD. But further testing showed she had been recently infected and she said she hadn’t been intimate with anyone else but Baum in more than 12 years.

On Nov. 3, 2022, Baum pleaded guilty to forgery for altering his STD test to conceal the fact that he had herpes, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Following a trial, on April 15, 2026, Baum was convicted by a jury of one felony count of forcible rape. An aggravating factor that the crime involved great violence was also found to be true." - KTLA 5 News
