I am a high school student thinking of joining the University of Akron mainly because of their polymer programs. I was almost certain of going there but then i searched up more stuff and saw alot of cons.

First of, I saw that safety is a real problem in Akron, Especially around the campus. Crime rate being way above national average so this was my number one concern since im gonna be an international student.

Second, I also have been hearing that the university is somewhat of a commuter school, with barely anything to do on weekends leaving students who are not residents nearby bored.

Third, I have been hearing that akron often feels empty throughout the day so i worry that besides the education part, I wont really have much to do there. Since it is considered a Rust belt city, I figured theres not much to do there at all other than studying.

Would highly appreciate answers regarding my concerns.

I'm an upcoming freshman looking to go to Akron Uni as an art major. I was initially interested in doing the Studio Art program, mainly for sculpture, illustration and 3D modeling. However, after talking to some people, it looks like some of the courses listed online aren't actually being offered anymore? Does anyone in the art program have insider info on what's going on with all that? Kent is more expensive but at least they have the courses I want...also, with all of this financial stuff going on, I'm not sure how that's going to impact the art school. I know there's a lot of opportunities for scholarships in Akron's art program (and trips), but it seems like they're not exactly honest when it comes to listing online what classes are available.

I will be attending the main campus next fall as a junior. I’m not a fan of driving, let alone on highways. Previously, I had been attending one of its branch campus that was closer to home.

While, I was supposed to attend the main campus this spring semester, I decided against it due to not feeling comfortable driving on highways and wanting to work on that during spring/summer break.

It’s a commute of 45 minutes depending on the highway conditions and whatnot.

And as we all know, gas is fucking high right now in Ohio. I will be attending classes from Monday to Thursday in the fall and I personally do not find the idea of spending around $100+ per week on gas pleasing.

So, would I just be better off staying on campus for my (hopefully,) last two years? Especially with gas prices? I am not a huge fan of being far from my parents but it’s not like I’m in a different state, but I am unsure if I want to go further in debt with dorm fees and everything when I can just commute and save money… which would have been fine and perhaps possible if gas prices weren’t so high, and I heavily doubt they’re going to lessen at this rate.

Also, thank you in advance for any advice given!

U of A Marching Band

I'll be attending the University of Akron in the fall and I was wondering if anyone here has gone/went there and if they enjoyed being in their band. I marched for 2 years in HS so this isn't my first rodeo.

Has anyone heard anything about these apartments? I’m moving to Akron in July/August for school and want to stay near campus. I see these apartments but they have no reviews and I haven’t seen any post talking about them. I’ve also been thinking about the fir hill/the tower apartments. Feedback on either of these places if appreciated!
