Phormictopus sp. Dominican Purple

My juvenile phormictopus sp domincan purple right after it's first molt with me!! I am so incredibly excited to watch it grow. Any name suggestions? I don't know the sex quite yet as its still too young to tell on the molt.

My baby passed

My baby, Chloris passed last night. He had been really slow and not moving around at all, very unlike him, and I knew he was gonna pass soon. His breed usually lasts 3 years and that’s I’ve had him for three and a half years now. He’s my first t and I’ll always think about him with any t I get in the future. I’m gonna miss him so much. Today is the first day I ever got to hold him. Here’s some pictures of my beautiful boy.

how can I tell lil guys mood?

I had to take my T (he’s a pink zebra beaut, if that adds anything) out to change his substrate. He always crawls up onto my shoulder when I handle him, I’ve got no idea why.

When I handle him he’ll crawl around for a bit, then find a place to settle and just stay there. I don’t handle him much, because getting him back in his enclosure is a mission. He will never willingly leave my hand and return to his humble abode. Very fussy boy.

Anyway, does he seem alright when he’s hanging out on my shoulder? He does it by himself, but I still worry it distresses him. Are there any easy ways to tell his mood? Aside from the obvious, kicking hairs and all that.

Some very nice pics I took of Aphonopelma Mooreae at a local reptile show by @bugbiologicalsllc

It’s not often that you get to see such a legendary T like this in person.

Chalupa drum circle

It’s a good thing there are no boy Ts around, or they would think Chalupa is raring to go instead of waking up the fam for bath time…

Poecilotheria metallica has become one of the most recognizable tarantulas in the world, which is strange when you consider how little room they actually seem to have left in the wild.

This is a species with a tiny known native distribution, fragmented habitat, and a long history of being far easier to admire in photos than to truly understand in nature. They were even rediscovered in 2001 after going more than a century without a confirmed sighting.

That is part of what makes this species so fascinating to me. They are famous, highly sought after, and widely recognized in the hobby, yet their story in the wild is still one of rarity, pressure, and shrinking habitat.

The hopeful part is that P. metallica has become one of the better-established tarantulas in captivity. That does not fix what is happening in their native habitat, but it does mean this species is not disappearing from the world entirely if ethical breeders keep doing what theyre doing.

The future of this tarantula may end up split in two. Uncertain in the wild, but secure in the hobby. That is not a perfect outcome, and it is definitely not a substitute for protecting what is left of their habitat, but it is a whole lot better than losing them altogether.

P.murinus sling dying?

Hello! I have already posted on the discord, but have received no response so far.

I noticed my OBT sling was sitting weirdly curled up in its burrow around yesterday, but didn't think too much of it. It was still sitting like that when I returned from work about an hour ago, so I decided dig it up. It is currently sitting in a box with a moist Q tip right in front of it. Initially, it was curled up, only occasionally twitching. Since then it has spread out its legs a bit more, but it's still struggling to move.

I believe it molted a few days ago, or at least I found a molt at the top of its burrow, so I'm assuming it's a fresh one. I'm thinking it could be a moisture issue, although I'm not sure if it was too dry or too moist. I dropped a few drops of water in its vial a couple of days ago and I worry that might have been too much. I try to feed it once a week, although I haven't his week since I assumed the molt was fresh.

Quick Question

This is Blanche- She was given to me two years ago before I stumbled upon this side of Reddit and learned how wrong her enclosure is. She needs a ton more substrate and obviously a completely different type of substrate- and possibly a bigger enclosure. Which brings me to my question- this girl has been on this type of substrate her whole life- she’s currently about 25 years old. In anyone’s experience- would changing what she’s known do more harm than good at this stage of her life? Is it worth the risk?

I’m obsessed with her and don’t want her to die…. Like ever. I knew 0 about tarantulas when I got her. I don’t think my neighbor (who gave her to me) knew anything about them either and kind of took her word for it as far as care.

Whats a mistake people make that annoys you?

I am by no means an expert but a few things that personally annoy me and I see this more with commercial pet shops not perfessional breeders.

. Sponge in a water dish. It can harbour so many bacteria.

. Using metal teezers or tongs. Could break the fangs.

. Not doing the research and buying an old world for their first tarantula. Honestly when I was a teen I volunteered at a pet shop we had some sort of Baboon tarantula can't remeber the exact genus and a woman came in wanting to buy it for her son who had absaloutly no prior experience in keeping tarantulas.

. Holding your tarantula. They shouldn't be handled unless absaloutly nessesary.

. Rehousing. Unless there is a good reason to rehouse, constantly moving them can stress them out.
