Did anyone do radiation testing on their property before buying?

Don't mean to sound paranoid but the more I read about the Santa Susana lab failure and the recent Woolsey fire the more concerned I am. Curious if anyone had their water or soil tested if they live close to this area. There is a shocking amount of cancer cases around here that are well documented by scientific professionals.

Vote in mock Governor's election using Ranked Choice Voting!

Hi, Voters!

Please take a moment and vote in our Ventura County-wide mock Governor's election using RCV!

A traditional election requires you to choose a single candidate and hope for the best. In a crowded field, as in this year's election, voters have to choose between voting for candidates they believe in and voting for those they think are likely to survive the primary and advance to the general. Vote splitting is on everyone's mind, and voters, Democrat and Republican alike, are struggling to choose which candidate to support in hopes that their choice makes the final two.

And, of course, Independent and Third-Party candidates are entirely left out of the process and labeled as a "throw-away" vote. (Sorry, largest block of voters who are registered as Independents. No soup for you!)

With Ranked Choice Voting, we could eliminate primaries and two-round runoff formats altogether and have a single, high-turnout November election with many candidates from across the political spectrum. Voters could vote for their preference, and constituents would get consensus winners.

No more strategic voting, no more vote splitting, no more lesser of two evils.

All candidates in this election are still in the race and were polling at or above 1% support in recent polls.

Have fun! Results will be released after the polls close on June 2nd!

Community Alert: masked thieves stole gardener equipment 5/11

My gardener’s equipment was stolen today while he was working on several homes near the corner of Semple St. and Barnes Ave.

They were driving what appeared to be a silver 2009–2012 Dodge/Ram 1500 crew cab pickup truck. The truck did not have license plates, and the individuals were wearing masks.

It also appeared they may have already stolen equipment from another gardener, as there were already tools and landscaping equipment in the truck bed before they took his.

Please keep an eye out, and if anyone in the area has security footage or saw anything suspicious, please reach out. Hoping we can help recover his equipment and prevent this from happening to others in the neighborhood.

"Ventura County residents are being warned about a recent increase in catalytic converter thefts across the county.

'In the past few months, there have been over 50 reported thefts of catalytic converters in most cities and various unincorporated areas within the county,' the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a Community Alert issued Wednesday.

Most of the thefts have occurred during the late-night and early-morning hours, often targeting vehicles parked on streets and in driveways, officials said.

Surveillance footage has revealed the following information to investigators:

- Suspects typically work in pairs or small groups

- They often use two vehicles

- The thefts are carried out in less than two minutes

- Suspects acting as lookouts may be armed

'Due to the potential risk, citizens are urged not to approach or confront the suspects,' the Sheriff’s Office said.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is urged to report it by calling 911 or by contacting their local law enforcement agency’s non-emergency number, depending on the urgency of the situation.

Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

- Remain aware of your surroundings

- Park vehicles in well-lit areas or inside a garage when possible

- Install motion-activated lighting and security cameras

- Consider installing a catalytic converter anti-theft device

- Etch your vehicle identification number, VIN, onto the converter

- Activate vehicle alarms

Anyone with information about the recent thefts is asked to call the Ventura County Organized Retail Theft Task Force’s recorded tip line at 805-383-8703. Tips may also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477." - KTLA 5 News

Hi everyone I’m a dad that is originally from the sfv but moved out to Simi 4 years or so ago. It’s been really hard to make friends out here. My wife goes to this “mom’s group” hangouts at parks and stuff. I thought why not make one for dads? Was wondering if anyone would be interested in meeting up for something like that? Our kids get to meet new friends and hopefully dads get to meet friends also.

Edit: I have a 9 year old daughter, 5 year old boy.

"Simi Valley police arrested a suspicious subject Tuesday after he was spotted climbing from rooftop to rooftop while wearing what appeared to be an Amazon delivery vest.

Police said it’s unknown whether the suspect had any affiliation with Amazon or why he was wearing a delivery vest.

Around 9 a.m., dispatchers received a call from a resident reporting a suspicious-looking individual peering into vehicles near North Calle La Sombra and East Via Alegre.

Officers located a suspect who matched the caller’s description, wearing an Amazon delivery vest, latex gloves and carrying a large backpack. He was later identified as 33-year-old Simi Valley resident Jaroslav Hriancik Jr.

After spotting responding officers, Hriancik reportedly led them on a foot pursuit through a nearby neighborhood.

During the chase, police said the suspect was seen climbing onto rooftops in the 5800 block of Fearing Street, moving from roof to roof.

After establishing a perimeter and using a drone, officers were reportedly able to safely track and contain Hriancik on a rooftop.

Following a brief standoff, he reportedly surrendered without incident. A search of the area did not reveal any vehicles or residences that had been burglarized, police said.

Hriancik was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Center on suspicion of resisting a police officer, an outstanding felony warrant and a post-release community supervision hold.

Simi Valley police told KTLA they did not have any further details about the suspect’s possible affiliation with Amazon, as he chose not to answer questions when he was being read his Miranda rights.

KTLA reached out to Amazon but has not yet received a response.

The Simi Valley Police Department is encouraging residents to report suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency line at (805) 583-6950 or dialing 911 in emergency situations." - KTLA 5 News

I know posts about homelessness usually go sideways on Reddit fast.
People argue.
People stereotype.
People talk about “the homeless” like they’re one giant faceless category instead of individual human beings with wildly different stories.
But something happened recently in Simi Valley that genuinely reminded me why this town is special.
A local moms group started rallying around a homeless man named Anthony — most people know him as Ton Ton — and his senior dog, Arrow.
And before anyone rolls their eyes and assumes this is some performative internet thing, hear me out.
This man isn’t asking for luxury.
People are simply trying to help him get a van.
A van means:
safety for him and his elderly dog
protection from weather
secure storage for belongings and artwork
stability
dignity
a chance to stop surviving moment-to-moment
That’s it.
And what’s been incredible is watching how many people in this community responded with compassion instead of cynicism.
The original post in the moms group absolutely exploded. Thousands of people viewed it. People shared the GoFundMe. Others offered supplies, dog food, encouragement, resources, and kind words.
Not because everyone suddenly believes they can “solve homelessness.”
But because they still believe people matter.
Honestly, that’s what I wish more internet conversations understood.
You do not have to agree with every decision someone has ever made to acknowledge their humanity.
You do not have to personally donate.
You do not have to become a full-time activist.
But somewhere along the way, online culture convinced people that compassion is weakness and that mocking struggling people somehow makes you smarter or more “realistic.”
It doesn’t.
If anything, the response from this town proved the opposite.
The strongest communities are not the ones that pretend suffering doesn’t exist.
They’re the ones that refuse to become emotionally numb to it.
And maybe that’s why this story resonated so deeply with people here.
Because most of us are a lot closer to hardship than we’d like to admit. One medical issue. One layoff. One tragedy. One impossible season.
At the end of the day, I don’t think people will remember who won arguments online.
I think they’ll remember whether they chose cruelty or humanity when they had the opportunity to choose.
And I’m proud that so many people in Simi Valley chose humanity.

I've tried Reds and Zeff bbq and they both are not the good, they are mediocre at best. Reds is semi decently priced but honestly you get what you pay for and with Zeff bbq its on par with Reds and just stupidly overpriced. I've heard great things about green acres, but was wondering if there are any other awesome bbq joints in Simi that are actually worth a try.

"The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office announced two suspects were arrested in connection to a string of burglaries targeting computers on Freightliner trucks in the El Rio area.

Detectives reportedly began investigating a group of individuals targeting the trucks during the month of April 2026.

The suspects would reportedly approach the vehicles during the nighttime hours, break a window to gain entry, then steal the onboard Common Powertrain Controller (CPC) computers before fleeing.

The computers are essential for vehicle operation and cost $3,300 to replace, according to the sheriff’s office. Victims were unable to use their trucks until they had replacements installed.

Similar crimes had reportedly occurred in neighboring Oxnard and Simi Valley. Following an investigation, detectives identified the suspects as 46-year-old Lenin Leyva and 39-year-old Ryann McMurtrey of Los Angeles.

Detectives conducted a traffic stop with the Fillmore Police Department on McMurtrey’s vehicle on April 29 in the 1400 block of East Harvard Boulevard in Santa Paula.

Stolen CPC computers were recovered during a search of the vehicle, which was also seized as evidence, the sheriff said.

Leyva and McMurtrey were booked into the Ventura County Main Jail on charges of grand theft, burglary and vandalism. They’re being held in lieu of bail.

Leyva is also reportedly currently on Post Release Community Supervision for a prior burglary conviction out of Los Angeles County." - KTLA 5 News

Has anyone noticed it being unusually busy in town today? I’m on the east part of town and seemed like a lot of cars coming in over the hill this morning. Lots more cars parked in the plaza in Tapo Canyon/Alamo (Vons/Kohls area) and even down Tapo in the dead shopping center with Neighborhood Market.

Not a complaint or anything. Just curious and wondering if anything’s going on today?
