I bought this off Facebook without really thinking about it because my dad had a Shopsmith and I was being sentimental. My daughter and I do quite a bit of woodworking together. We have lots of free-standing tools (SawStop, drill press, miter saw, lots of cordless hand tools, etc). The only function that I can really see myself using in the short-term is the lathe. I know, I know... there are better lathes out there that wouldn't take up as much space.
I have already read lots of hate about this era of the Mark 7 (after I had already committed). Now that SS is back in business, and reading that many pieces can be 3d printed, I'm wondering if it's all bad...
I bought it for $50 (with several boxes of accessories). Do I cut and run? Sell parts? Restore and have fun with it? What do you think?
These tools look so handy for the guy with limited space. I found a clean Mark 5 (500) with a bandsaw and joiner attachments. Is $300 a fair price ? Thx
Modifying a 10ER for space?
Hi, I'm looking at a used 10ER, hopefully finalizing a deal in the next 48hrs. At the moment there is limited space in the garage AND for the near future I'll only be doing very short projects (think bowls) and likely only using it as a lathe.
Would it be reasonably straightforward and safe to replace the large horizontal poles with shorter ones to make it a short lathe? I'd keep the old ones to revert it when I move to a bigger place, of course. I assume my plan is do-able, after watching tear-down and assembly videos of MarkV's but thought I should ask to be sure. Thanks!
