Here's my feminist playlist 🌈💣
Not limited to riotgrrrl but definitely in the same spirit.
All genres, all decades. Female rage up top and then many other topics below.
Recommendations are very much welcome.
BTW if you love the riotgrrrl scene but you enjoy more acoustic folk type music, you may enjoy looking into the womens music scene of the 1970s (primarily lesbians). Olivia Records, Ferron, Alix Dobkin, Woody Simmons, and Sweet Honey in the Rock is a good place to start. If you enjoy old school websites, this is a great resource: https://www.queermusicheritage.com/women.html

paper help please?
IM NOT ASKING SOMEONE TO WRITE MY PAPER FOR ME.
i'm currently writing an essay on the Riot Grrrl movement/bands and it's gotten to the point where I need to mention how Riot Grrrl is functioning today.
i'm completely blanking. im literally sitting here in the RG subreddit and i just genuinely cannot seem to find anything that makes sense... i see a lot of yall are in bands which is super cool to me but im not sure what to put in this section.
i'd really really appreciate it if anybody has any sort of sources like news articles or books etc on the current status of RG and how/what we're doing as a community..
again i'm asking for someone to write my essay. or look it over. i'm just wondering if anybody can help me find proper sources for the current state of the Riot Grrrl movement as my university library online database has nothing and google has lowkey jsut been leading me back here
(i'm sorry for any grammatical or spelling errors. this essay is going on two weeks late and im not keeping it together while trying to write it lmao i promise my essay won't have any problems like this!)
thank you :)
Looking for recordings of Lois Maffeo’s KAOS radio show Your Dream Girl (1980s Olympia scene)
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to track down any recordings of Your Dream Girl, the radio show hosted by Lois Maffeo on KAOS (Evergreen State College) in Olympia, WA during the 1980s.
From what I understand, the show was pretty influential in the early indie / riot grrrl ecosystem, featuring a lot of female-fronted and DIY bands — but I can’t seem to find any surviving audio online (Internet Archive, YouTube, etc.).
So I’m wondering:
Did KAOS regularly archive shows back then, or was it mostly not recorded?
Does anyone here (or someone you know) have off-air cassette recordings of Your Dream Girl?
Are there any known archives (Evergreen State College, personal collections, zines, etc.) that might hold recordings or even partial tapes?
Even the smallest lead (a clip, a playlist, a mention in a zine, a person to contact) would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks so much 🙏
resources for zine preparation on predators in scene
hi everyone
I am going to start a zine on predatory behaviour in the alternative music scene, more particularly in the punk/HC subcultures.
I am myself active in the scene and work as a DIY sound engineer in those scenes (and I'm a woman ).
does anyone know of any resources I could access (preferably free ) to get more info beside personal testimonies ? could be articles/ books / activist's groups / interviews / and even songs on the topic ?
I am based in the Netherlands but I'm open to everything so far
thanks
Have y’all heard of The Phlegms?
They’re a riot grrrl band (or at the very least, girl punk) from my old hometown! I thought y’all’d be interested, especially since they’re still making music (I think)
My favorite song of theirs is Rigid
Does anyone else think that Babe Haven absolutely FUCKS and is one of the best bands ever?
I am so absolutely infatuated with this band, and Lillie has the best fucking vocals ever
"Bratmobile’s Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman spin vinyl, stream and keep the radio star kicking"
Had a great Q&A with two members of the legendary Riot Grrrl band Bratmobile. Among their most interesting and fun answers...
Punk Rock Bach: What are you listening to now?
Allison Wolfe: I’ve been making politicized playlists to channel collective rage, so lots of The Coup, Downtown Boys, Public Enemy, Amyl & the Sniffers, Sistah Souljah, Babes in Toyland, Rebel Diaz, DAM. Some current bands I love are Death Valley Girls, Amyl & the Sniffers, Trap Girl, Snooper, Linda Lindas, Roselit Bone, The Okmoniks, Downtown Boys, Morgan & the Organ Donors.
Molly Neuman: My favorite new album is Morgan Nagler’s “I’ve Got Nothing to Lose, and I’m Losing It.” It came out last week and it’s gorgeous and sincere and fun and captivating.
I can always listen to The Pretenders, Oasis, Pet Shop Boys, Raincoats, Prince and Rites of Spring.
Urgent Update: A trans sister was left for dead in Gorom Camp. We’ve raised less than a quarter of the €350 needed for her hospital bills and shelter.
I’m writing this from a hospital chair in South Sudan, and I’m honestly exhausted. For those who didn’t see my first post, I need to tell you what happened. Two nights ago, one of our trans sisters in the Gorom refugee camp was cornered by a group of men. They didn’t just beat her, they tried to break her. It was a calculated, brutal hate crime. By the time I got to her, they had already torn her tent to shreds destroying the only tiny bit of safety she had in this world.
I managed to get her to the hospital, but in this region, "healthcare" is only for those who can pay upfront. I’ve been staying by her side, watching her deal with the physical pain of her injuries and the mental trauma of knowing she has absolutely nothing to go back to. Her home is gone. Her clothes are ruined. In South Sudan, being queer is a death sentence, and right now, she’s living that nightmare.
We set a goal of €350. It’s not a huge amount for a community, but it’s everything to her. It covers:
The Hospital Bill: So she isn't turned away or detained for debt.
A New Shelter: Buying the poles, heavy-duty plastic sheeting, and a basic sleeping mat so she doesn't have to sleep in the dirt where she was attacked.
We haven't even hit 25% of that goal yet. The doctors are talking about discharging her soon, and the thought of her walking out of these hospital doors with no home and no protection makes me feel sick.
The "system" here doesn't care about queer refugees. They are ignored by the big aid groups and targeted by their neighbors. We are quite literally all she has. If you can send anything small or big, it goes straight to her survival. If you can't give, please share this. Don't let her story disappear into the silence.

Gorom Settlement is becoming a graveyard for LGBTQi+ refugees. After today’s brutal attack, I cannot stay silent.
My vision is still blurry as I type this, and my head won't stop throbbing where they kicked me. I’m currently huddled in a corner of the Gorom settlement, trying to pull the remnants of my torn clothes together to cover my bruised skin. Today, the air in this camp turned into pure hatred. I was cornered by a mob that saw my existence as an insult they strike me, they tried to break my spirit with every blow to my face and chest. I am bleeding, I am terrified, and for the first time, the silence of the night feels like they are waiting for me to close my eyes and attack me again.
The reality for LGBTQi+ refugees here in Gorom is a nightmare that never ends. Many of us fled the horrors of death from our home countries like Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda or persecution in Kenya (Kakuma), hoping to find a "safe haven." Instead, we have found a place where our visibility is a death sentence. The camp is overcrowded, resources are non-existent, and the hostility from both the host community and other refugees is suffocating. We are being told to leave, to disappear, but there is nowhere for us to go. We are trapped in a cycle of stoning, daily abuse, and a total lack of protection from those who are supposed to keep us safe.
Below are links that show the world what is happening to us here. Please, read them so you know I am not exaggerating this pain:

I am reaching out because I cannot survive this alone. I need medical attention for my head injuries and basic necessities like clothes and a way to find a safer space, even if "safe" is just a relative term here. If you can find it in your heart to help me stay alive, please consider contributing to our fundraiser or even sharing this post.

Thank you for seeing me when so many choose to look away. Your solidarity is the only hope I have left tonight.

My review of I Love You So Much It's Killing Us Both by Mariah Stovall
This book is about a sort of toxic, deep friendship between two women/teenagers. Yet it is oddly organized. It begins with Khaki Oliver receiving a baby shower invitation from her best friend who she hasn't spoken to in 10 years. This causes a lot of anxiety, stress, etc. That is the introduction. The book then begins telling the story of Khaki as she starts Freshman year at college which is a bit outside of LA county. Khaki's originally from California, but her and her mother moved to live in NJ across the river from NYC the summer before high school. I think it's a suburban area of Newark. They moved because her father had disappeared/abandoned them. Khaki starts college furious with her x-best friend over something she doesn't share with the reader. She goes to punk shows, becomes close with her roommate, and lots of other things I do not wish to spoil. The next part of the book is when she's a freshman in high school, newly moved to NJ, and discovers punk rock and meets her best friend Fiona who has a severe eating disorder. The story then follows their deepening friendship, Khaki going to shows, and other things I do not want to spoil. Overall this is a great read. It did not suck me in for more than an hour at a time, but I was always looking forward to coming back to it. The writing is decent, the story good. Lots of references to punk, hardcore punk, emo, and pop-punk. Stovall has a soundtrack for the book at the back and lots of lyrics throughout the book itself. Most of the music she's into isn't my kind of punk, but Leftover Crack is great and I was quite happy to see a lyric from a Bratmobile song. 3.5/5 stars, definitely recommend it.
