John Lennon on Queen

Many of you probably know that Queen idolized Beatles and that Freddie Mercury considered John Lennon to be his greatest mentor. And also that Queen even dedicated a song to John Lennon (Life is Real).

However, Queen also influenced John Lennon. Especially "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". In 1980, after a 5 year hiatus, John decided to come back to music and mentioned explicitly this song as his inspiration. He declared in an interview that "I started noticing what was happening when Queen did the Elvis-sounding tune... I thought: 'This is my period again."

In one of his final and most famous interviews (conducted by David Sheff for Playboy in September 1980), Lennon addressed Beatles fans who were stuck in the past. He urged them to look at what was happening in the current music scene: "Listen to the Beatles records, but dig Queen or Clash or whatever is going on now." John acknowledged Queen as his continuators, which meant a lot for Queen, as Roger Taylor later declared.

However, Lennon first talked about Queen in 1975. He said that his son, Julian, liked them:

"Julian likes Queen... I've heard of them. I've seen the guy... the one who looks like Hitler playing a piano? No? Julian says, 'Have you seen Queen?' and I say, 'What's Queen?' and then he tells me. His age group is hipper to music."

Also, I think it is funny that John's first description of Freddie was "the guy who looks like Hitler playing a piano". (he was talking about Sparks, my mistake).

Fun fact: MJ had cited 'Hot Space' as an inspiration for his own album 'Thriller' 🕺🪩

Also MJ, who was friends with the band at that point, was the one who convinced them to release 'Another One Bites The Dust' as a single in 1980, as the band was hesitating on doing so.

It then went on to become a huge hit, and so Queen decided to work on their next disco-funk esque album, Hot Space.

Was Queen II almost a concept album? I tried reconstructing one from Mercury’s early Rhye songs

Most people know Queen for their biggest hits, but in their earliest albums, Freddie Mercury was writing something quite different: a group of fantasy songs set in an imaginary world called Rhye.

Queen II has always felt very close to being a concept album to me, especially the Black Side, but it never fully commits. The title is neutral, there’s no clear narrative, and some tracks don’t quite connect.

So I started wondering: what happens if you actually expand the Black Side into a full Rhye album?

I tried reconstructing a concept album from Mercury’s early Rhye songs, using the Black Side of Queen II as the core and expanding it with a few tracks from the surrounding albums. Heard this way, it starts to suggest a fragmented story of a king moving through that world.

I wrote a piece exploring the idea (structure, themes, references), which led to a conceptual album called The King of Rhye:

Curious to hear what you think: would you consider it a concept album?

(Originally published in August 2021, I revised and expanded the article following the release of the Queen II Collector’s Edition, which renewed my attention on Mercury’s early fantasy material.)

I decided to find out how big is "Freddie tax" in Garden Lodge's price

As we know, this wonderful house now costs 30 000 000 £ which is... quite a lot. As we know, the price is so high mostly because it's Freddie's house. This is what makes it special. I call this price factor "Freddie tax". I got really curious, how big it actually is.

So, Freddie bought it for 500 000 £ in 1980 if I'm not wrong. It's 2 783 121 £ in current money. Subtracting it from the nowadays price gives us " Freddie tax" - 27 216 879 £ It's 90,72293 in percent.

We don't count the price for everything that is added to Garden Lodge interior by Freddie and isn't sold, because we don't actually know how much it is.

That's it. A bit of useless, not really accurate information...

Queen Greatest Hits 2002 DVD with 5.1 Audio

Not sure if there are any audiophiles or tech nerds in this subreddit, but I just ordered the 2002 Queen Greatest Hits DVD from eBay for about £3. I heard you can extract the audio from the DVD and get some sort of surround sound from it? Wondering if I can split the audio into stems. Does anyone know how high quality this sounds? Apparently it was remastered back then for 5.1?

Edit: what I’m trying to say is, could I use this to make rough “official” stems of instrumentals / primary/backing vocals?

Queen's lyrics

I have loved Queen since I was 11 years old (1981). I saw them live at Knebworth when I was 16 and they spoilt other acts for me, they could never be beaten. I own every album, single and multiple rare vinyls and box sets, and they will forever be my favourite band.

However, and I am curious if anyone agrees, lyrically they are not as world beating as they are in every other area. I'm not expecting Leonard Cohen levels of lyrical genius from any band, and indeed the Beatles were not great lyrically either, but if there is one area in that I would say Queen are not ahead of the rest it is the lyrics.

DISCUSSION: Do you approve or disapprove of artificial intelligence colorizing black and white photos?

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become a key element of our daily lives. On the one hand, it has proven to be a highly useful tool when used correctly, enabling tasks such as isolating instruments in a song or restoring old photographs. On the other hand, its ability to perform in seconds tasks that would take a human hours or days (such as musical composition or the creation of illustrations) has generated profound debates and discontent. Focusing on the latter, this creates controversy surrounding doubts about the originality of the works and the fear of job displacement in creative professions.

For the context of the following discussion, since 2020, platforms capable of colorizing black and white photos with a single click have emerged. Initially, the results were questionable, as the images often presented a "heated" or artificial tone that did not do justice to the natural colors. However, with the passage of time and the emergence of models like ChatGPT and Gemini, artificial intelligences have appeared that can colorize with surprising accuracy.

To illustrate this point, I'll ask an AI (called "Fixo") to colorize two photos (one in black and white, and another that was originally in color). The first example shows a classic photo of Queen from 1977. The second example comes from the photoshoot for "The Works" (1983-84). Now you can draw your own conclusions. What do you think? Do you approve or disapprove of artificial intelligence colorizing black and white photos?

Does anybody else like A Day At The Races

ADATR>ANATO. Tie Your Mother Down, Somebody To Love, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy, Drowse, The Millionaire Waltz. And my two favourites Teo Torriatie and Long Away

There's a difference between being actually great versus being great and overplayed. Half ANATOs songs are good but are overplayed and talked about hugely ( exept The Prophet's song ) and the rest of the songs are bad. That album is largely dominated by four songs Borhap, DOTL, YMBF and LOML. And don't get me wrong ADATR is not perfect but overall it is more consistent. The songs just aren't as famous

QUEEN - A Night at the Opera [2026 Full Album Remix & Remaster]

My fan remix & remaster of Queens's 1975 breakthrough album "A Night at the Opera", made for my own enjoyment, but sharing in case someone else might enjoy it.

I know this album already sounds pretty great, but since Brian & Roger have decided to officially remix the band's first 2 albums, I wanted to give this one a try myself just for fun. This may be controversial, but I think their self-produced albums like 'A Day at the Races' and 'News of the World' sound better than those made with producer Roy Thomas Baker. I just wanted to see if I could make this one sound a bit closer to that.

As usual, I tried to improve on clarity, instrument separation and punch, without straying too far away and staying respectful to the original version.

Obviously, I don't own the music featured here. If you like the music, support the artists. Buy their records!
