Popcorn for Breakfast

Storytime.

Manager of a theater here, and I used to be the designated opener (basically) on busier days. Well, on those days, because I like to sleep, I would always skip breakfast. Because of this, I had a running joke with my staff on those days where I would get a little cup of popcorn, and right before I opened the doors I'd always raise it and announce "popcorn for breakfast". Well, I stopped being the opener a lot after our closers started to suck at their jobs, but many years later, I have found myself starting to open again and getting back into tradition.

Now, I'm no scientist, but if I eat popcorn with no butter or salt for breakfast, isn't that basically just as healthy for me as if I were to eat a bowl of un-milked, corn based cereal? I've been thinking about this for a while now, and maybe I'm just delusional and trying to tell myself eating popcorn for breakfast 4 times a week is healthy.

Does anyone else do this? Has anyone else ever thought of this?

Usually Lurking

Been looking into popping my own popcorn for awhile so I would lurk and see what people were talking about and different opinions

Well today I tried my hand at popping in a cast iron Dutch oven we have and I think it turned out alright. Used Amish Popcorn midnight blue from the 3lb sample pack I purchased off Amazon. Used Dutchman's butter flavored coconut oil and some flavorcal

I believe it came out alright, might have to add some more butter flavored coconut oil to it afterward cause it doesn't have a strong butter flavor that I like, but for the first time it came out good

Just wanted to share and goes back to lurking

Why doesn’t my homemade popcorn taste like the movie theater?

I bought the flavacol and the butter flavored coconut oil.

My process summarized is:

  1. Melt oil and mix in flavacol

  2. Turn up heat and add two tester kernels

  3. When tester kernels pop, add all kernels

  4. Shake/stir the pan so all kernels get coated

When i see people online use these ingredients their popcorn comes out looking super yellow and flavorful. Mine is pretty bland. I feel like i have to add more flavacol on top of it to get the flavor but other people aren’t doing that.

I feel like i maybe shouldn’t be mixing the flavacol in so early or i’ve got the wrong ratio of ingredients. The ratio i’ve tried is 1/2 cup kernels, 4 tablespoons oil, 1/2 tablespoon flavacol.

Welcoming any and all tips!

Is there a healthy substitute for Flavacol?

Was thinking of a making a healthy alternative to the usual home cooked recipe for popcorn like switching the butter oil for olive oil but I’m struggling on finding a alternative for flavacol (the orange seasoning movie theaters use for there popcorn) if there even is any, you guys have any ideas?

Or if there is another healthy popcorn recipe please share

Coconut Oil pucks appear to have went moldy

Has anyone else run into this? I did this about a year ago and didn’t have any issues. We bought more in November and now just a few months later there appears to be mold.

I’m trying to think how it happened and also what I can do to either prevent this or tackle this differently.

We liked this as it made it easier to just pop in the puck and popcorn. It also was nice as the oil is solid when we get it so I would just warm it and then measure and refrigerate.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Did you ever try hot and spicy popcorn?

They're DELICIOUS. Waayyy better than classic or sweet popcorn, no debate. First time I tasted those was when my aunt brought microwave popcorn packets from UK. I can't find them anywhere in France though... Does anybody know about them?

Peanut oil failure thrice

Hi my English is not my first language. Need help!! I buy peanut oil in bulk for my popcorn because it’s the best oil for popping popcorn, my popping preference. I buy 4 gallon tubs. In three separate occasions I spilled the entire 4 gallon tub. First time it was because I was trying to build some momentum in the air and I tried to cut the rope a notch to lower myself a little closer to the corn but I went upside down with the 4 gallons of oil and it spilled all over my thighs. The second time I was at about a 75 degree angle in the air and tried to furl myself around my Whirly Pop with feet up in this way that my body simply couldn’t take and I must of died for a few zeconds cuz when I came back to I was sprawled out on the ground seeing stars, the Jug and was gone but the oil was everywhere my kitchen basically was a slip inside in that moment. I tried to have a little fun with it but I just needed to cry it out. The third time my buddy was there to spot me, he gave me a boost I was standing on his shoulders and he held on to my ankles to stabilize me but I think he cut off my circulation. I had a tattered rag over my eyes because I was scared. A few hours later I came to basically dangling off the chandelier half dead. Should I try a different oil

4700bc popcorn

The popcorn at 4700 BC is always on point—fresh, perfectly salted, and super crunchy. The caramel mix is a must-try if you like a sweet twist. Definitely elevates the movie experience.

Help -popcorn is always chewy and pot only half full

Hi,

I love popcorn. Right now I have a Whirley bird popper that I use on an electric stove. 1/3 cup popcorn, 2 tablespoons butter flavoured coconut oil and flavacol. Add three kernels. Once they have popped I add the rest of the popcorn and complete the popping. I open the half lid as soon as it’s done. I really don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Suggestions welcome.

How to get freeee corn

Last year around July I found a sprouted corn seed under my dish drainer so I thought that was cute and planted it. it grew quickly into a giant stalk. It grew 3 ears.

I planted it too late and a typhoon swept away most of the pollen, but one ear did grow some kernals. the other 2 were tiny. I was surprised it grew 3 ears. it was already dying by then because it was getting cold. that plant really tried hard to reproduce!

this year I planted more seeds and planted earlier. I hope I can get some ears. I planted bobs mills white corn and I'm also going to plant some of the Amish caramel corn. that corn is really tasty.

try it yourself! it's easy to grow, grows super fast, and hey, free corn!

Microwave popcorn - no oil, no butter

I follow this video https://youtu.be/t7u3JLNgy5k

For this bowl, I use 25g of raw kernel, a little bit of water and salt, put a lid on or microwave-safe plasric wrap with a few holes, put in microwave for ~5 minutes.

This bowl is 86 cal, very easy to make. This was my second try so I had a few unpopped popcorn, but I can just chew them later. This snack certainly makes my top 3 list, together with frozen grapes and jello.

What is your favorite/preferred popping method?

I have a Whirley Pop that is my new standard. Before that I had this thing the size of a crock pot, with metal hands similar to a Whirley Pop. You would put the oil and kernels on the surface, then put the cover on and turn it on. The arms would move by themselves and the corn would pop, then it was done you flipped it over with the lid on, because the lid became the bowl. You just had to first put this little cover on it so the oil didn’t seep out.

But now Whirley Pop is the way and the light. No electricity needed. Just a flame and a wrist that won’t get stiff within 3 minutes! 😊

Random question: does anyone know if Whirley Pop works on an electric range as well?
