This got removed from r/baking for some reason and someone commented and told me to put it here soooo..

I made a chocolate bar!! Swipe to the end to see her in all her full glory

Bought my cacao pod, fermented the beans for 4 days, roasted them for 2 hours, winnowed them (cracked the shells and took out the actual cacao) took me THREE hours , ground them into cacao

powder, mixed with milk powder, ginger, brown sugar and melted cacao butter, mixed that in a food processor, tempered it, put it in moulds and let it set in the fridge for ~an hour and now i have four delicious door shaped chocolate bars!!

And theyre so delicious!! im so pleased w myself

What are they putting on the Wyndham’s windows (and why)

We were walking around Point State Park this afternoon and noticed them covering the windows facing the park. I’m assuming it’s an extra sun protectant to lower cooling costs but I’ve never noticed it before. Is this the first year?

I am a Southern Frenchman wishing to receive a post card from Pittsburgh.

Greetings! I am a 17 year old artist and collector of postcards, letters and other interesting paraphernalia relating to other countries. I have just gotten in to the postcard business after finding a blank one in the street. Would any lovely folks be down to exchange postcards?

My post card would originate from Nîmes; a small-ish city in Southern France that is home to a Roman arena, a massive aqueduct, and one of the best preserved Roman temples in Europe known as the Square House.

I have chosen Pittsburgh as my target due to a friend— an American of the Texas state— stating that Pittsburghians are very proud of being from Pittsburgh. Would anyone here be happy to confirm or disprove that theory? I have never been to the United States, only Canada and Italy, Romania, Hungary, Spain, England, and a bit over the border of Switzerland.

I accept that this demand may be against the rules, and if so, I strongly apologise; and I shall have no quarrel with those who may choose to remove this post. Thank you!

Stomach bug going around

This week I caught a brutal stomach bug, hours of vomiting, then you think it’s over… and suddenly you’re running to the bathroom for round two from the other end.

It completely wiped me out for a couple of days. And now my husband woke up today and has started his turn.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Found a new (to me) antique mall! The Risch!

Fo those who like antiques, this is a hidden gem. The Risch. It’s out in Sarver, on route 356. I never knew it was there despite passing it hundreds of times on the way to my sister’s house. It’s on the smaller side but the prices are fantastic compared to the larger ones and the ones closer to Pittsburgh. Make sure to go through the door to the attic, there are more rooms back there. I’d love to see this place get some love, it’s a great little collection of vendors. Happy Antique Hunting!

Block where ~20 rowhomes were replaced by 6 detached homes in 2013

The block is in Garfield. Going through historical imagery on Google Earth, you can observe that the original rowhomes gradually fell into a state of disrepair and were demolished one by one over the 90s and 2000s until the land was eventually redeveloped in 2013. At least one of the reasons they weren't redeveloped into a denser configuration more similar to the block's historical development is it would have been illegal under the land's modern zoning. For example, despite formerly containing rowhomes the land is currently zoned for 5ft minimum side setbacks, meaning a 10ft minimum distance between buildings.

This is just one example of a phenomenon that has occurred a number of other places around Pittsburgh over the decades, especially in the Hill District.

Hit and run

Alright, I know this is a long shot, but let’s see if the universe is feeling generous today.

I parked my car near the corner of Dearborn Street and N Evaline Street around 3 PM while visiting a friend. Came back around 8:30 PM and discovered that someone clearly isn’t winning any parallel parking awards as they unfortunately smashed my car in the process.

They hit my car and then left the scene without a note.

I called the police and they said they’ll check street cameras, but I’m keeping my expectations… realistic.

If anyone was in the area and saw what happened or caught anything on a doorbell cam, I’d really appreciate it. I got this car in December, so I’d like to enjoy it without damage.

And if you’re the person who did it and happen to see this: accidents happen, I get it. But leaving without a note is not cool. I’m not angry, just trying to get my car fixed without turning it into a full detective series.

Thanks.

Trying to find resources to feed a large underprivileged family

I did call PA 211, but came to a wall. Applied for meals on wheels but am waiting for a phone call back to see if I’m eligible.

Last time I needed Reddits help was for transportation resources and I learned about jitneys, which has been a game changer btw, so I figured I’d try my luck again!

Thanks :)

Family tips for the CMU carnival

This was my first year attending the CMU carnival and we had a great time! I wanted to share what I learned, specifically for going with kids, for anyone else who might be going for the first time.

- Easiest parking is in the East Campus garage. It's not cheap, but I think it's the best option without a major schlep.

- Bring cash! If you're buying games or ride tickets from the midway they charge $1 per transaction if you use a card.

- Check your kid's height before deciding on ride tickets. I thought I was being a cool mom by buying each of my kids an unlimited ride wrist band... turns out my youngest could only ride two rides.

- Unlimited ride wristbands are $22. Single ride tickets are $4.

- If I had to do it again I would pack drinks and snacks and then let them pick one carnival food as a special treat.

- We got there about 3:00 Friday afternoon and there weren't lines for anything. As the day progressed some attractions got really long lines. So if there's something you want to do and you see a chance to do it without a line, jump on it! (Looking at you, ferris wheel.)

I hope this helps! I couldn't find much info online beforehand so I'm putting it out there for anyone like me who likes to plan. Enjoy your outing!

Me and my wife live in the Harrisburg area and want to come to Pittsburgh to see the Pirates play the Phillies next month. What parts of the city or suburbs would you recommend to stay?

Both of us are from Philly originally and now live near Harrisburg and want to go to PNC Park to see the Phillies play the Pirates but neither of us have ever been to Pittsburgh so we have no clue what area to even look. What area would be good to stay. We are both Gluten Free if that makes a difference. Thank you so much
