Moving to the Peak District
Hi everyone!
My wife and I will be relocating to be nearer to family in Derby and have decided the Peak District would be a perfect area to move to (we love the outdoors and getting out for a hike). I thought I'd see if Reddit could be of help in suggesting any nice towns/villages to focus on!
We'd be looking at the south of the Peaks within roughly 45 mins of Derby. Our initial search radius goes from Belper up to Bakewell, across to Leak and back down through to Ashbourne.
We're mid-30's and don't have kids (not planning to either) and we are looking for places that have a nice vibe to them, good places to eat/drink, nice community, etc. and aren't too far a drive in to derby so we can see family pretty frequently.
We've been looking at the places that I mentioned but if there are any nice little villages that'd tick the box then please let me know!
We'll be doing some reconnaissance later this year to decide where we'd like to end up, so I'll be putting a list of places to look at.
Thanks for any help/guidance in advance!
I did a hike yesterday from Penistone to Edale and then got the train back via Sheffield. Pretty much all trails from leaving the house and takes in some of my favourite places, including Langsett, Howden/Derwent reservoirs, and kinder. It really should be more of a famous route and I picked a glorious day for it. 20 miles in total and took 6.5 hours inc breaks, stopping off at the cafe at Derwent for a coffee and some food. Left house at 7am and was in Edale for 1:30 which was sooner than expected tbh but I do walk fast.
I’d probably change the route next time to take in more of kinder but really recommend this. Finished with a pint at the Rambler Inn while I waited for the rain home.

DOFE ADVICE!!
me and my friends are going to be doing Duke of Edinburgh Silver this following Wednesday and we are all a bit scared of the terrain in the Peak District and wanted to ask a few questions:
- How likely is it to actually fall of the peaks(?) or cliff edges?? I’m not sure what you call them..
- Are the pathways clear?
- Is it scary?
- Is it difficult to do?
I’m really sorry if these sound so dumb 😭😭 THANK YOU
Edit: all my thanks to the people that have answered my questions!! It was really helpful and it 100% calmed our nerves THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN
Montsail trail or The Manifold Way cycling with 21 month old trailer?
I cant decide which one to do tomorrow, the google images look more interesting for Manifold Way?
Where to stay a night in the Peak District?
Hello! Me and my boyfriend will be driving up to York in a few weeks’ time and thought we’d do a mini detour to the Peak District. I’ve never been and as an immigrant my knowledge is limited.
Where would you recommend as a one night stop? We like nice pubs, history, good food. Pretty easy to please. I’ve been to Derby and was told to go back to my own country, so perhaps not that one but otherwise open to suggestions!
From the post (Fire warden and Peak Ranger):
Fuck fire. Fuck people that deliberately start fire. Fuck having to see a leveret charred and near death wandering the burnt zone. Fuck having to hear a short eared owl screaming for its young in the smoke. Fuck fire. Fuck people that deliberately start fire. // And when we drove back from the Snake to our own patch an hour ago there was a campfire in woodland.
An appliance returning from the Snake fire diverted to put it out.
Tonight we patrol our own patch. Tomorrow we'll return to the Snake fire. // Fuck fire. Fuck people that deliberately start fire. // Is there any part of this message you don't understand ?
Hi!
I'll be visiting the Peak District in the beginning of July for 9 days, to do research for my book. The book is based mostly in Buxton but I want to make the most out of my time. I would love some tips from locals and those who have been there before! What's worth going, what to maybe skip, what to absolutely not miss and so on.
My main focus is Buxton but I'll also be making one daytrip to Chatsworth and one to Tideswell. Would love to do 1 or 2 hikes as I love to hike - maybe one dayhike and one shorter, so suggestions as to what to choose is welcome. Preferably on the not-hardest side of trails as I injured my foot a while back and will have to be mindful.
I'm open to all suggestions and tips for getting the full and not tourist-y Peak District experience ❤️
Buxton to Castleton and Mam Tor
Hi everyone,
On Sunday I’ll be hiking from Buxton to Castleton as I’m treating myself to a few nights away to get some miles in.
I know vaguely where I’m going but does anyone have any suggestions of footpaths or know the best or nicest way to go?
Also I’m a bit overwhelmed with all trails suggestions from castleton aswell. Can I do Mam Tor and the reservoirs if I get out early enough? Happy to cover 20 miles a day.
If anyone wants to join for any of it I’m up for making friends. I’ll be sampling the Castleton pub grub and a few pints while I’m there. 😁
Can anyone recommend anything to do with our 21 month old when visiting?
We are going to the Peak District staying in Matlock next week. We are going to cycle the Montsail Trail with our little one in a child seat. Just wondering what else is there around? Thanks
Some great conditions on Black Hill today, just got better throughout the day. Got all 3 trig points (Featherbed, Black Hill and Hay Edge), which isn't something I'd want to attempt after any amount of rain.
Hello, I am on holiday in the beautiful Peak District from the Netherlands. Great stuff, bit hilly though.
Anyway, I had wanted to hike around Snake Pass Summit on Friday. Unfortunately the wild fire made me have to cancel that plan — a policeman near the Snake Pass road closure at Ladybower Reservoir told me to check up on the news to see when it would open up again.
So this afternoon I checked, and two media outlets said the Snake Pass was open again. But when I came to Ladybower Reservoir, the road was still closed (despite the electronic signage saying it was open as well).
Now, is there a place I can check that will definitively say (preferably somewhere online) if the road is open or not? Where to check for this sort of information? I might not hike there, but I would like to drive there at least on the way to Manchester on Sunday.
(Props to the emergency surfaces for getting the fire under control by the way. A few wild fires in the Netherlands have been burning the better part of this week I heard)
Afternoon all,
planning on doing Mam Tor on the Saturday with a few mates from back home- they're quite keen on getting to the pub for the 12:30 championship games. Are any of the pubs likely to be showing it? TIA.
