How did you acquire your collection?

I regrettably sold my childhood collection of Alpha through Iceage for chump change when i was 13. i wish my parents had realized the value and not let me do that! didn’t have any power but had lots of lower end rares and uncommons, all heavily played to good condition.

i’ve been lurking a lot here and wonder how people have gotten their collections these days. just kept your old cards? heirloom? flea market bulk miracle? would love to hear about anyone’s old school/vintage origin stories.

edit: wow amazing stories, all! thank you for sharing. this has been a really great thread. condolences for all you who also don’t have your early year collections anymore. like one person said, most of us didn’t realize what we had! cheers

Aside from Ebay and TCGplayer, where can I pick up old school mtg without spending a fortune?

I lost my collection recently and want to get back into it. I've been looking at singles and lots on eBay and the prices are ridiculously high. Just wondering what other place I can go and not spend too much on old school mtg. I am looking at cards pre ice age, mainly revised.

How is Magic experienced today?

This morning I went to El Rastro in Madrid, where in "my days" there used to be a lot of people trading Magic cards. I'm talking about the early 2000s. We used to play at school (end of the 90s) and went to some tournaments and release events that were really a lot of fun. Also the trading experience of meeting random new people, look through their binders and almost always finding what you needed. It was the time of Urza's Saga. There were a lot of vintage cards around, but for people like me, the price of buying such cards to play in Type I tournaments was prohibitive.

Back to where I started, this morning I found basically people trading Pokemon and football trading cards and 0% Magic the Gathering. I asked around and it seems that up until Covid there was mostly Magic, but afterwards these people never returned. It also seems that Pokemon collectors are really mostly collectors, but very very few do play with the cards. I was quite surprised to find not a single Magic soul there, especially when a prerelease these days gets so quickly sold out and for such crazy prices.

Which brings me back to the title of this post: how is Magic experienced today? How is it in other European or American cities? Do people still gather in flee markets or similar places to physically exchange, buy and sell cards? Do people play with the cards at all?

I helped run a historic Magic the Gathering Old School Cube event in Vegas last week!

Hey all, I hope you're doing well. Last week, in the days before MagicCon, I had the pleasure of hosting and commentating a historic "high stakes" Old School Cube draft in Las Vegas. The event was presented by Kraken, the enormous crypto exchange co-owned by a good friend of mine. I personally designed the Cube event, including both the prize structure and the contents of the 360 card Cube.

While I'm not into crypto myself, the High Stakes Cube marked an opportunity to watch people contest games of Magic with cards from Magic's first year. Playing with those cards honors them, and respects their legacy. I donated my cards for the players to use on both days, and I'm happy to report everything came back unscathed.

The card pool for this Old School Cube extended from Alpha to Fallen Empires. The Cube itself was composed mostly of Alpha cards when possible, with a smattering of Beta and a few CE cards thrown in. All the principle cards were Alpha though, including the Power Nine and 27 of the dual lands. The three Volcanic Islands were of course Beta, by necessity.

The event utilized a unique ante structure to award prizes to competitors. Players drafted their decks Rochester style, and then used the standard "cut and ante" mechanic to determine the stakes of each game they played. The winner of each game earned a cash prize roughly equal to the sum secondary market value of the cards they won in ante. We came to calling these awards "bounties".

Here are links to three separate Youtube videos documenting the two-day event. Day one saw eight invited celebrities draft and play the Cube. Day two was more cutthroat, as competitors each paid a $5000 entry fee to play.

Day 1, Part 1:

Whether you're a fan of Old School or a fan of Cube drafting, there is probably something in the broadcast to enjoy. Famous Magic player, broadcaster and Pro Tour Champion Tom Martell joined me as the color commentator on both days, providing expert analysis of the draft and the games themselves.

If you find time to watch some or all of it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the event. It was a huge hit among competitors and live viewers, we hope to run it again next year.

Thanks for your attention!
