Life in Newport Beach

Hey all. I’m curious to hear if Newport Beach would be a good spot to move to and raise a family. What are the people like, the general politics, the food scene. My wife and I visited a friend in Corona Del Mar walking distance to the beach and it was incredible and we did some shopping at Fashion Island but haven’t explored much beyond that. Are people pretty accepting of new families coming in? We’ve looked at quite a few houses online on Balboa Island that look nice as well. Thanks!

Looking for testers for matchmaking form

Good day, OC singles.

I’m testing a small curated matchmaking system for this sub before deciding whether it should become a regular feature.

This is not a dating app, swipe system, or public profile database. The idea is to use a private form to screen for major compatibility issues, then send a small number of curated suggestions if there are reasonable matches.

For this first test, I’m looking for around 20 to 30 volunteers. You would fill out the form, get potential suggestions if there are compatible matches, and then give feedback to the mods afterward.

A few notes:

• Filling out the form does not guarantee a match.
• You will not be publicly listed or browsed.
• A connection only happens if both people select each other.
• This is meant to reduce obvious mismatches while still leaving room for actual chemistry.
• If something looks unsafe, unclear, or inappropriate, it will not be sent.

The form takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It is longer than typical dating questionnaires because this is meant to be more intentional and crafted.

If you’re interested in helping test it, comment here or message the mods.

WHY IS THIS OKAY?

We (homeowners who share a dock) live on Bayside Drive in CdM. Yesterday sea lions gave birth to pups and the pups found their way onto a floating raft tied to a neighboring dock on Bayside Place. One of the homeowners who share that dock were hitting the pups with sticks all day long and then later had two other younger hired help guys hitting them with sticks and poking them until they finally pushed the pups off the rafts. The pups were crying. Now one of the pups is missing and the mother is swimming around barking like crazy looking for him/her. We called NBPD and Harbor Patrol and they came out to investigate. We were told it was okay to hit them and poke at them. What?

When is it okay to hit newborn seal pups with sticks and rods? Or any animal? Is this what this world has come to? Abusing animals is okay? Why is this okay? What are we teaching kids about treating animals with such cruelty?  Serial killers start out by hurting animals. Is this something that needs to be investigated?

We all know that having a dock means we are responsible for keeping the sea lions off the dock. But these were babies sleeping on a raft that was in the water. BABIES!!!!!!

This is disgusting, disturbing, inhumane and heartbreaking.

God made animals before he made humans. We were created to care for them. It appears Newport Beach doesn’t believe in taking care of and not hurting baby sea lions. Isn’t that nice…

God help this planet.

Newport coast elementary

Does anyone here have thoughts about Newport coast elementary? I would send my child there for TK. Some reviews I saw on a school ratings website were quite bad - mentioning lack of community. I understand all the public schools in this area have affluent families and low diversity, but I’d still like my kid to feel comfortable around the other kids (and for me too as a parent)

3 kids and 6 grandkids. Buying standup freezers for the steaks to feed the grand boys.

Family farm in North Dakota. Some land in Indiana.

On the island but hang at either wedge or 10th tower.

Divorced 13 years ago and in retrospect that was a mistake. Fell into the Newport scene and became weak.

Have a few businesses but meeting “normal” people doesn’t happen.

lol. Dating scene. Gulfstream? Flemmings? Quiet woman? Eloquent desperation it seems.

Seems tough to just find someone to sit on a tower and watch the tide roll in.

Not lonely. Just wondering where the normal people are?

Old rugby guy. So not lookin for a boyfriend or an escort.

I landed a job making 160k per year working for a insurance company in the area.I'm going out before for my family Just willing to take any advice on where to look for good schools. When my wife get s a job it should be somewhere near income of 225k. I share all this just so you can tell me if I'm making a huge mistake. I'm going to be staying in long beach while we begin the process of looking for a house? My budget is a bit weird I've saved 20-305 of every check I've earned so cash on hand is probably 200k to 250k then on top of that i have an emergency fund of 40k and normal emergency fund of 20k in my checking and Another 2k stashed in index funds because i grew up poor. My home in Cleveland will likely sell for 300-350k. I Spoke to a realtor online and honestly she seems confident i can qualify for a 1.2 million dollar home. But i haven't done a hard inquiry yet.

About me I'm 43 a history nerd who like to hike and play war-hammer 40k. , just your friendly insurance nerd. I'm also on the conservative side of daily life, but liberal in politics. I guess that means in practice that if you step on my shoe i say sorry and if you protest i'm fine with it. IDK. I don't spend a lot of energy worrying about peoples political beliefs.I guess this is a long winded way of saying I'm a kid from the Midwest who keeps his mouth shut. I've heard California is more politically active but I don't know. My wife and family is Jewish but Is there a Catholic community that I can volunteer with or is active in the community?

I generally get along with everyone, and honestly to be clear anyone that is willing to hang out with me i'm grateful for getting share time with.

I guess in general i'm really looking for advice on how to start shopping for homes and finding good school districts and making friends?

Floating island in front of Lido?

Does anyone know what that big floating platform in the middle of the harbor is? If you’re looking out from Lido it’s a big platform with fake grass and chairs on it! Looks cool!
