Best NES Shoot Em Ups? (Shmups)

Hey all, I recently got an NES and would like to try a few Shoot Em Ups. I've never really played a true Shmup before, so I'm looking for a game that is relatively feasible to beat as a newcomer while still being fun. I generally enjoy a hard arcade challenge, so I don't mind if a game is "NES hard" as long as it's fair and the difficulty progression is somewhat reasonable. Basically, I'm looking a well-regarded and fun Shmup that I can realistically complete. Oh, I'm also collecting physically, so please don't recommend anything with a ridiculous price tag. Thank you!

Zelda 2: Help Me Figure Out What is Different About the Music Compared to Other Games

I was just watching someone play a mode of Zelda 2 hack (with the original music) and noticed there is something different about music from most other games. I can't really put my finger on it but there is a certain quality to it. Like a twingy-ness or something. Am I making any sense at all? Are there an experts that know if they did something different to make the music?

Weekly picks! Cowboy Kid is finally mine!!

Cowboy Kid is the heavy hitter, but no slouch in Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers 2, Linux Spacehead, Jimmy Connors Tennis, Dudes with Attitude, and Gold Medal 92 rounding out the half dozen. Also finally got all my Chromatic games boxed and shelved, and a few new famicom pickups cleaned up to play. Ordered a few cool Famicom Disk System titles which should show up next week, can't wait to check that system out.

It took a LOT of self restraint to not pick up an additional dozen or so titles that were starting at me on the shelf but weren't fiscally responsible. Like, a lot of self restraint.

I think this brings me to 781 unique official pre-96 releases at this point inclusive of variants. Getting so so close :)

Happy hunting y'all, best of luck out there!

My 8 & 16 bit setup

Got a CRT as a housewarming gift, wasn’t sure it worked and put it in storage. Got a wild hair and decided to give it a chance so maybe I could play Duck Hunt again. Turns out it works great so I setup my NES, SNES and Sega Genesis to be played in their original glory, playing on an HDTV feels wrong. Yes I’ve already switched to a better stand for the tv lol

What causes this glitchy line?

It does this only on the main screen. Never when I'm playing any of the levels. But once I beat a level and go back to this screen, the blinking line is back. I've tried finessing how the cart sits but the line persists. Otherwise the game works great. It's only this game that does this. And yes, I've thoroughly cleaned the pins with Deoxit.

NES CLASSIC MINI - NO AUDIO

Hello...I haven't used Hakchi in quite a while, but I have used it plenty to mod my NES Classic Mini. At one stage I added a custom audio file for the main menu screen. Some sort of techno remix of the Mario Bros. theme song or something. I assume it is a .wav file. I went to play my NES for the first time in about a year and there is no audio. I recall this happened before and I can't recall how to reset/remove the custom audio file. I'm pretty sure this is what is interfering with/stopping the audio from working.

Has this happened to anyone, and how do I remove the custom audio file and go back to the standard one? Thanks.

Old collection

just some of the games i had since '87 thru the early 90's. i was always a mega man fan. i wished they'd made a real sequel to kid icarus back then. the original contra, definitely one of the best games of all time. the original metroid is great, but i believe the sequel(for the original gsmeboy) is the best metroid game.

Difference between these

Hello. Took apart these two copies of SMB / Duck Hunt to clean them and noticed a very different board / chip setup inside. Can anyone explain the difference I’m looking at (aside from the obvious visual differences). Is one a newer run or what is going on here

Carrying Case for Retron 1 HD?

Wondering if anyone found a good fitting case or bag for the Retron 1 HD that would fit the console, 2 controllers, the cable, and 1 cartridge. I can't find one from Amazon that fit the dimensions. Hyperkin isn't selling a case specific to this model.

Audio crackling on CRT with toaster NES

I recently moved and now my NES (original model) is having audio crackling issues when its turned on. It persists even when the audio composite cables are unplugged, its coming from the yellow video input. Is this a problem with the NES itself, the cables, or the TV? I'm suspecting something happened during the move but I'm unsure how to isolate the problem and was hoping someone experienced a similar problem?

Hello everyone 😎

Looking for some information on this NES that I’ve found. I can’t seem to find any for that include Dr Mario? Have any of you come across this before?

I’m also looking for a protective case for this if anybody can recommend somewhere in the Uk?

Thanks for any help.

My NES collection at the moment

Here is my NES collection, it's not a lot, but I'm happy with it. My favorites being all the Super Mario games, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Batman, TMNT 2 the Arcade game and many more. What are your favorite NES games in my collection? And what games do you think I should add? I'm always looking for Mega Man games and games I never got a chance to play growing up.

I'm eventually going to move these to better shelving in the future, as I would like to store them with the rest of my gaming collection eventually.

Also the Tengen game is R.B.I. Baseball.

Super Dodge Ball players

What is your main team? I just realized after years of playing, I rarely pick anything other than Sam, Randy, and Steve.

Honestly, it probably stems from NES games being so difficult that once you found something that works, you stick to it.

Is there any other team combination that is a must play?
