Attention JJGo

I have just stumbled across a facebook account called The Heathyorker. An account that swaps the captions of Heathcliff and New Yorker comic strips.

Not since I was recommended a page called Clown Girls Honk Heaven has my feed been so blessed(cursed?)!

I animated a hilarious moment from My Brother My Brother and Me where they start doing terrible impressions of the Beatles and other rock stars. I thought this group might get a kick out of watching it!

I've loved all of Jordan's work for a long time, but it feels like the last few months, he's on some kind of comedy PED's. Everything has been so funny and his hosting skill on Free With Ads has really gone up a level. Thanks Jordan!

Jujubes pronunciation

Prompted by the latest kings of BoCo Stop Podcasting yourself episode - many times both Graham and Dave have pronounced "jujubes" as "joo-joobs". I, an American in the great state of Nebraska, have only heard it pronounced "joo-joo-bees". Is this an Americanism? Regionalism? Vancouverism? Is there an official pronunciation?

Also I assume Graham's talking about jujubes. It could be a completely different Canadian treat I'm totally unaware of.

This came up in my mind because of Greatest Generation/Trek leaving Maximum Fun.

They may be making the best decision for their show, but I only know about their stuff because I subscribed to The Flop House many years ago and randomly tried their podcast just a couple of years ago. It took a lot of hearing their various bumps on network shows to listen to their podcast, which I really thought wouldn't be my thing, and ended up loving it. Only the trust I had in Maximum Fun shows enticed me to give it a shot.

When I heard ads for unrelated podcasts picked by a podcast marketing company in The Greatest Generation today, I straight up hated it. My fondness for a podcast is a fragile thing. The difference between hearing bumps for Maximum Fun shows and hearing bumps for "how to make money" type shows is huge for me. I often stop listening to podcasts because I don't like the way they use ads created by unrelated entities. I find it jarring and unpleasant.

So, not only am I unlikely to not subscribe to their new service, I'm likely to stop listening to the podcast entirely.

I don't have anything against what they are doing (I'm sure in many ways it makes a huge amount of financial sense for them to be able to set the price for a subscription), but I don't think my limited podcast listening time is going to be able to survive a jump away from Maximum Fun. It might, but I haven't decided yet.

This has nothing to do with finances and everything to do with vibes.

Also, I don't subscribe to Maximum Fun to get away from the ads. When I heard about an ad-free feed, I was like, "Why?" The ads are part of the fun.

Update: Thanks for all your kind replies. I love MaxFun and of course I contribute to support the shows and will continue to do it. I just really like the pins. I seem to recall ongoing membership gave me an exclusive chance to buy a pin? I could be wrong about that. Anyhow NBD folks, remain calm.

I've been a member for quite a few years, and I haven't been able to boost my membership in a while. So, what thanks do I get during the Fun Drive for being a continuing member? I might have missed it- but do I get a pin or anything? Feeling a bit taken for granted over here.

Moving up a full level wasn't doable for me this year, but I added a $5 boost. I love that Maxfun offers this option.

And woohoo to the ad free feeds!

Thank you Maxfun folks! 🩵

Sony Pictures Animation’s Bubble movie can’t be cancelled… right?!

Who knows when it’ll see the light of day?

Is it even in limbo…?

It’s the final few hours of the Max Fun Drive, and I finally went to maximumfun.org and did what I could. Unfortunately, all I could do is renew my $5/month donation.

I thought this would be the year I’d do a nice upgrade. At least $10/month, maybe even $20/month. But circumstances are what they are, and I had to stay at $5. I don’t feel good about it though. Not because of any sense of pressure to upgrade or anything like that. Just because I listen to Max Fun shows all the time. There are a couple podcasts outside the network that I enjoy, but mostly I enjoy and rely on the vibe Max Fun provides. And my guilt complex is such that I feel like I’m not doing my part by upgrading. I know there isn’t a soul at Maximum Fun HQ who would say I should feel this way. My feelings are on me.

Which is why I wanted to shout out everyone who gives to and keeps Maximum Fun up and running. I greatly appreciate those who also value these great shows and step up to help out. I truly believe Max Fun supporters are making the world a better, more welcoming place to be.

I was thinking today about the general state of my life and why things feel the way they do. I’ve had a chronic illness for nearly two years now, and then there’s all the other ugly stuff going on in the world. But there’s also Maximum Fun.

It was a struggle to come up with a metaphor that made sense, but this is what I hit on. One time when I was a teenager, my dad asked me to dump the ashes from the wood stove. I hated dumping the ashes. Nasty stuff. And what happened next proved what nasty stuff it was.

After the ashes cooled, I took them out to dispose of them, but I tripped in the mud room, and the ashes spilled. And the thing about ashes is, they get everywhere. If there’s a nook or cranny, they find their way in. They filled the air. My mouth, nose, and lungs took a hit. Cleaning them up just made more of a mess. Days later, they were still getting tracked around.

That’s what life feels like right now. There is a filthy, sooty layer of nastiness on everything. It’s inescapable. Except not really, because when I put on a Max Fun podcast, there is no ash. The microscopic grittiness is gone, and I can breathe easier. Listening to Jordan and Jesse riff on nothing in particular, considering Judge John Hodgman’s well-constructed rulings, going to sleep every night with Dave and Graham being wonderful and silly in my earbuds, and so many more … it’s a shelter from the storm of cruelty and unkindness that the ruling class perpetrates against the world and my own body perpetrates against me.

Wow. I’ve written way more than I planned to. I’ll wrap up by saying this. Maximum Fun is a podcast network that is guided by decency as its North Star. And when I consider my own values, it all comes down to that same thing. I can think of several times when Maximum Fun hosts have been in situations where the easy thing, the attention-grabbing thing, would have been to resort to naked cruelty, to lash out with little or no regard for the consequences. But in each case, decency has ruled the day.

So I’m proud to support Maximum Fun, and I’m honored to be among the thousands who do so. I’ll make my peace with not being able to give more this year, with the hope of being able to provide more in 2027.

My wife and I were discussing the network and we were wondering about the history the various shows. Specifically like a timeline of when shows joined, left or just stopped producing.

Does this exist somewhere? If it doesn’t, is it something people would be interested in?

Sleeping to baseball

Catching up on max fun pods and there have been a few mentions recently of the pleasure of falling asleep to a baseball game. Just wanted to recommend the Northwoods Sleep Baseball podcast to anyone looking for this experience. Very Joe Pera vibes and I can vouch that it does what it says on the tin.
