With the game Battle for Toshi Ranbo coming out and its completely unhinged premise of all seven clans fighting over a place that realistically only 4 clans can access without issue got me thinking of all the goofy l5r things over the years.
Game Design via typo.
The Sparrow Clan the only clan that exists to be terrible on purpose.
Tsu Fish the landwalking treeclimbing fish whose eggs are both an amazing delicacy and a source for high quality ink.
Jaw from Ryoko Owari whose sole existence is to complain about his existence.
The "Mountain Tuna" in the Dragon. The devs stuck to the flesh is unclean thing so hard they had to make a special lie to cover for the mountain clan eating goat.
So, I'm trying to build a new character after my last game fell through. I want to go with a Crab member this time and I had an idea, but the GM wants me to ask all of you about your thoughts. (He already has his decision, I'm sure, I know the guy, but he likes to get others opinions while leaving his players in suspense.)
Mother was affected by Shadowlands Taint (Fire) and went into the Shadowlands while pregnant with my character, trying to gain knowledge of more destructive capabilities to use against the demons. Gave birth and abandoned me in front of two Hiruma scouts, then ran further into the Shadowlands never to be seen again. Father is unknown.
Character has Large Stature, and Whispers of Cruelty and Ferocity. Because of this combination as well as circumstances of birth, rumors abound that my character's father is actually a demon.
Character leans into this since he knows he can't escape it, wielding a steel-shod tetsubo and wearing a demonic mempo.
Kaiu family, Hida school, raised by his aunt and uncle
Edit: Playing 5e
So like the title says, I had a friend who passed in February of 2025 (I wouldn't be surprised if he had been on this subreddit quite a bit but he was very private and I have no idea what his username was).
I've never played this game and don't know anything about it but I was left with this collection and I'm not sure what to do with it. I have many other things of his that hold sentimental value and I don't particularly feel the need to hang on to all of this, especially if there's someone out there that would get enjoyment out of it the way he did.
I guess I'm hoping for some advice or information on what exactly all of this is and if I should hang on to it or look into selling it. I would appreciate any insight. :)
TLDR; Don't know anything about the game and not sure what to do with my friend's collection
This is a question I’d love to have experienced DMs answer: How do you assign official roles or titles to characters?
I want to move away from the typical clichés, like Emerald Magistrates, and assign roles that feel realistic while actively driving the political plot forward.
So far, I’ve only thought of roles like bodyguards for Bushi, or assistant ambassadors, subject matter experts, and clan bureaucrats for Shugenjas and Courtesans. However, I’m looking for ideas on how to assign titles and roles that make Status increases feel meaningful in a long-term campaign that spans several years of in-game time.
Hello all,
I am about to play in a L5R 4E game, and I have been really liking the open-source character generator. However, my GM has thrown a minor wrench into the works, and I have found another minor issue.
I have downloaded the source code from GitHub, and while I have never coded in Python before, I have coded in other languages and get the basic jist of most of the code. I am looking for any guidance you can give on the following issues:
a) Alter the dialog that allows for setting the health level multiplier to also allow for a change to the default health multiplier (Default to 5 but allow alterations). I can't find the dialog in the code.
b) Save the new base health multiplier to the character file and reload it on loading. I don't know where that happens.
I believe nothing else will be affected.
Still a fantastic app, and I'm glad it's there to help.
Any help or warnings are appreciated.
Thanks.
I’m trying to read through all the old stories from Kaze no shiro.
Someone recommended I listen to the garbage of the five rings podcast. Which I did and was disappointed that it just stopped.
But I learned that reading kaze no shiro isn’t enough as certain parts of the story are in the RPG books.
So my question is.
Do the RPG book editions line up with the CCG story arcs.
Like is it that 1st edition is the clan wars and the second edition is the four winds?
How do the stories from the RPGs fit into the CCG story arcs?
My main worry is how to keep the pcs from killing each other if they are from different clans. Any suggestions?
I also wish to throw some political intrigue where pcs are willing to go against other lords of their own clans while also protecting their lords.
I'm also very into mysteries, but I know the court system in rokugan values witnesses more than evidence so I'm thinking how to deal with that
I listened to the interview with Josh Reynolds today. He mentions that there's a reference in the first chapter that connects this novel to the Daidoji Shin series, loosely.
Tried re-reading the chapter with that in mind, but I can't quite catch anything. Anybody figure it out?
I might be completely missing it, but I can't find basically any weapons that a Shinobi might use that are concealed.
Does anyone have a comprehensive list for 5th edition? Trying to make a character for the rpg, but I can't find a suitable weapon for him.
I thought I'd make new images for the dice using symbols to make the game have a more ascetic look.
not entire happy with the North. South. East and West Winds, Does anybody have any better ideas?
Title says it all. I'm relatively new to the 5E of the L5R RPG, and am looking for build advice from the ground up. I want to play an extremely tough, fighty bastard of a character who excels at both surviving (ie: tanking those hits) and killing. Powerful hits, staunch armor. How do I go about that?
